Memo to Peter Angelos: "A sense of family the Orioles used to have, but is now gone."

These were the words of Ryan Hendricks, Elrod's son, at his funeral yesterday. ONLY 1 MEMBER OF THE ORIOLES CURRENT 40-MAN ROSTER WAS PRESENT AT THE SERVICE (MELVIN MORA). There were many others from the baseball community there to pay their respects, but sad to see no current players attended except Melvin Mora. Elrod was on the coaching staff until this year. After the stroke, the team moved him to another job, but Mr. Hendricks never grew to like life outside of an Orioles uniform.

PIRATES INTERESTED IN SAMMY SOSA

A report today by Rob Rossi in Listin Diario, a Dominican news service has the headline, "Piratas Interesados en Sammy." The article is in Spanish, but they use terms like "Jim Tracy," "Sean Casey," and other words are close enough to the English to bear out the headline. I just googled Dominican newspapers, because that's where a lot of news is these days. The story was filed from Pittsburgh.

Diamondbacks sign Eric Byrnes to 1 yr $2.25 million deal

And Byrnes (no relation to Josh Byrnes) will play CF , which he says is his favorite position. With Byrnes in CF, Shawn Green will move back to RF, his natural position.

The Yankee recruiting calls help sign Dotel

First base coach Tony Pena, Joe Torre, and Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson were among those placing calls to reliever Octavio Dotel. The NY Daily News reports Brian Cashman saying the competition for the player was so heavy, they had more people talk to him than anyone.

BBWAA Hall of Fame Rules state as follows: "#5. Voting shall be based on a player's record, playing ability, INTEGRITY, SPORTSMANSHIP, CHARACTER, AND CONTRIBUTION TO THE TEAM." I wonder how many people realize this? THERE IS TO BE NO DEBATE ABOUT THESE RULES. IF VOTERS OR OTHERS DON'T LIKE THEM, CHANGE THEM. "#6. NO AUTOMATIC ELECTIONS BASED ON PERFORMANCES SUCH AS A BATTING AVERAGE OF .400 OR MORE FOR 1 YEAR...OR SIMILAR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT." Miguel Tejada is "more upset now" than a month ago

Tejada made his comments in the Dominican Republic saying it's been a month since his initial complaint, but the Orioles still haven't done anything. He also responded to questions about wacko Rafael Palmiero's implying Tejada gave him a banned substance. Miguel said that everyone knows there's nothing bad about B-12.

Kevin Millar makes some sense

Via Boston Blood Sox and the Salem News, Kevin Millar comments on the influence of WEEI on Red Sox personnel. Whether or not this is the case, I've listened to WEEI to hear how they deal with Red Sox coverage. I heard Keith Foulke interviewed by them last summer and was sickened. Maybe Foulke or other players have contracts to appear on the station---I don't know. But, no human being and no baseball player should've put up with what Keith Foulke did from these guys on WEEI. I'm not necessarily blaming them---maybe it's customary there. But, the players should not allow themselves to be whipping boys of this station. Foulke took what they said way too seriously. The guys on WEEI sounded like lightweights to begin with. I've heard many interviews of baseball players & personnel around the country & in my opinion, WEEI is taken too seriously.

On the Angels needs for bats, says Casey Kotchman will help. On signing Troy Glaus, the Blue Jays will look to trade Hillenbrand, Hinske, or Koskie. On the Pirates, is high on p's Oliver Perez & Kip Wells, & bullpen p's Mike Gonzalez & Damaso Marte. With the A's, Mark Ellis is under the radar--has good BA and power. High on Dan Johnson at 1B. The Red Sox CF is more likely to be Jeremy Reed than Coco Crisp at this point. They are extremely well-stocked with pitchers.

The Baltimore Orioles bring powerful Jeromy Burnitz to Camden Yards, pending a physical. The outfielder and original draft pick of the New York Mets contributed to the Cubs, Brewers and Rockies as well. The Orioles said there is no deal anywhere for star player Miguel Tejada.

Miguel Cairo close to re-signing with Yankees

Cairo appears closer tonight to returning to the Bronx as utility infielder. He provided memorable footage for 2004 highlight reels---for both Yankees & Red Sox fans. During most of the second half of that season, he was at 2nd base for the Yankees. In 2005, Cairo played across town for the Mets.

Damon faces Mo, Game 3, 2003 ALCS

Game 3, 2003 ALCS, NY @ BOS, bottom of the 8th. Score 4-3, Mo comes on. First batter, Johnny Damon, hits a chopper which Mo nabs himself, & gets Damon out at first. A few pitches later, the rest of the order is gone. Game now on YES network. Next up will be the fantastic game 7 of the same series, where Mo pitched 3 scoreless innings in a tie, extra inning game. Just nice to see on Dec. 26.

Interesting pieces of Damon press conference

Damon's father was very upset by Boston's initial offer to his son (they say the game is passed from father to son); Johnny grew up with Jason Varitek, who was probably the most upset at his leaving; the Yankees came on strong, and the Red Sox 'laid in the weeds;' John Henry said Johnny never came back and let us match the offer---Johnny said they did. Warner Wolf led off the questioning, asking Damon how he felt not having to face Mariano Rivera or Randy Johnson anymore. Damon said he was very happy about that, & mentioned that "MO IS THE GREATEST CLOSER OF ALL TIME." I know this would upset Dibs and Kevin Kennedy, who are on vacation. I'm thrilled to hear it, especially from a great hitter. Once in awhile, the truth does get out in front of skewed media opinions.

Boston Globe's Gordon Edes gives fascinating rundown of Damon drama

Gordon relates Boras' version & the version from other industry sources. The timeline, & the phone calls...Johnny said he called the team the day before(not sure if he meant the call he made to Francona, which Francona has stipulated, or to another member of team management); Boras called them the day before, one of them called back the next day, but about a different player, etc. Edes says Brian Cashman felt the biggest hurdle was the bond between the fans and Damon. Cashman phoned Damon at one point to get a feel for this.

Matt Lawton also dumps it on someone else---his teammates

I just noticed Matt Lawton's poor-me job. But what threw me is he's throwing unnamed Yankee teammates under the bus. Don't Lawton or his agent read the papers? How exactly will this advance Lawton's cause? Is he trying to open a formal investigation into illegal activity by his former teammates? So, it will be their fault and not his? (Assuming his vague remark has any truth to it whatsoever)? So, a bunch of his former teammates will be suspended like he was? There has to be a limit to borderline slanderous remarks like this. At the very least, guys like this should be in a shrink's office a few times a week.

And, that's just from the Yankees....the Red Sox will have to put $4 million into Bud's stocking according to an Associated Press story in the Boston Globe. Checks are due in Bud's office no later than Jan.31st. Next question: EXACTLY HOW WILL BUD SELIG SPEND THE YANKEE AND RED SOX FANS' MONEY? This money is going into someone's pocket, someone connected to MLB. The fans who paid the money for all this deserve answers.

Johnny Damon is a Yankee----4 years, $52 million

Jon Heyman and Ken Davidoff of Newsday (New York) confirm reports that Johnny Damon has signed with the Yankees. Heyman was a guest on XM, relating details. Some Red Sox fans called in saying Damon wasn't so great anyhow. The host on XM, listed in google as an announcer for a Red Sox farm team, had the good humor to play a version of the Sinatra hit, "New York, New York," as he signed off. The Red Sox seemed to be proceeding as if they might not have Damon in 2006, though I never thought that would be the case. The Yankees needed a lead-off hitter, which they haven't had since Chuck Knoblauch. In spite of all the talk about CF, the leadoff hitter helps them immensely.

Mel Antonen, USA Today: No Lee Smith---too many of his saves were "easy"

On the subject of HOF voting, he'd vote in favor of Bruce Sutter and Goose Gossage. On the issue of Lee Smith, Mel says, "He played on some teams where the saves were easier. Not on enough CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS. " He says he's "AFRAID IT WOULD OPEN THE DOOR FOR CLOSERS WHO DON'T DESERVE TO BE IN THE HOF." "The stat "saves" is relatively new to baseball. People don't quite know how to judge closers yet. We need time to figure it out." Thanks, Mel. What you say is obvious & true, but due to lack of objective reporting in the sports media, it's often ignored.

Joe Strauss, St. Louis Post-Dispatch---Unfinished left field

He says the stadium will not be finished for next season--- much of the seating in left field won't be available. Team owners said the new stadium would enable them to spend more on payroll. Now, they're not spending it, but Strauss gives them a pass by saying the new stadium won't be finished for awhile. On 2nd base needs--the team has always liked Jose Vidro....but, they'd need some relief from his $7 million pricetag (should the Nats. decide to move him).

Re: Soriano, Jose Vidro's knee hasn't been right for 3 years, & Soriano could be at 2nd if it doesn't improve. On the other hand, if he's told to go to left field, he has no choice but to go. The DC City council votes on the stadium next Tuesday. If they don't get the required 7 votes to approve the deal, MLB may have to move the team again. Reinsdorf said their 2.7 million attendance wasn't very good. Ha! Considering all that was done to prevent the team from playing at all, I think it's great! Barry estimates payroll will be $60 million, against about $52 on 2005. Re: their tv deal, Angelos, etc., he doesn't see that being resolved til the last minute. Why isn't MLB asking Angelos to sell the Orioles?

Re: Johnny Damon, Holden asks Sam what he thinks will happen. Sam continues the media lies: he says Boras might do what he did last year with Carlos Beltran: keep the bidding going on Damon til the last possible minute, then call the Yankees at the last moment, & ask them if they'd like him at a higher price. LIE. This is the opposite of what happened. Boras called the Yankees about Beltran at the last minute, & asked them if they'd take Beltran for LESS than what the Astros were offering. Of course, Holden Kushner said nothing. As usual.

Tony Jackson, LA Daily News on Dodgers, Bradley, Perez

Ned Colletti is clearing the house of the bad character guys. There wasn't "a glimmer of hope" where Bradley was concerned, he hadn't lived up to expectations & wasn't going to. Jackson says he doesn't always go out & play his best, as some like to fantasize. Interestingly, Tony says Antonio Perez was also a bad character, had been traded 5x in the past 8 yrs., didn't do well defensively, & didn't try to improve himself. On Mueller, he has past experience with both Colletti and Grady Little, will probably bat 2nd, & be at 3rd til Dodger minor league prospect is ready.

Dejan Kovacevic, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on the Pirates

Says Chris Duffy is best CF the team has had since Andy Van Slyke, & a decent lead-off hitter. PNC park has the equivalent of 2 CF's--right field is as cavernous. Their great NL Rookie winner is also high in VORP---5th highest in all of baseball this year (Value Over Replacement Player); had over 100 walks, had good average & rbi's, & all with no protection. He likes Bill Mueller as a candidate for 3B, won't add a lot of power, so team should get a power hitting RF. Little known, their leftie reliever, John Grabow, allowed only 4 inherited runners all year. He's also high on future of P Jim Colbrun.

Gerry Fraley, Dallas Morning News on the Texas Rangers

Says the Rangers will build up stock of lefties like Wilkerson, & righties like Mensch will de dealt first. Soriano thinks he'll make more $ as a 2B, but Fraley thinks he'll do as well as a power hitting OF. Says Alfonso can't move to his right very well-- doesn't know what problem is. And, he's still a 125 strike-out guy. Blalock "has gotten away from some of the things that made him great." Rangers are showing interest in Clemens---Fraley says few pitchers willing to work in such a hitter-friendly park. Re: Ranger fans-- a very good fan base, but want more to happen. Says Twins, Cubs & Blue Jays are most likely places for Texas to obtain pitching.

Gordon tells Chuck Wilson he's waiting around to see if he has to run to an announcement about the gm situation in Boston. If Theo was interested in the Nationals, he might've changed his mind about that, as MLB has caused a drag on the whole situation there. Damon's agent has got Boston scared now about the Dodgers' interest in him. Re: Renteria, in an interview yesterday, he said the field conditions in Boston may have contributed to an injury he sustained there that effected him most of the season. But Edes says the Red Sox didn't acknowledge such a situation.

Dibs mentions Orioles' problems for pitchers

He won't give names, but Dibs knew several pitchers in the past few years who had a chance to go to Baltimore, but wouldn't. One reason: they didn't want to face the Red Sox & Yankees so many times. Of course, Dibs also finds a way to plug his pal Hoffman for no reason, how he took less money to stay home with this family. Dibs doesn't mention that Hoffman's demand for more money cost the Padres Mark Loretta, said to be the heart of the team.

Dibs & Kevin on Benjie Molina, Javy Lopez, Milton Bradley & others

They say sadly, Benjie Molina &/or his agent Alan Nero's actions have cost him. The Angels would've offered him 2 years, but he turned it down. The Mets wanted him, but he strung them along, trying to get more years, & the Mets went to LoDuca instead. Molina could've been nicely settled, but he over-priced himself. On the Orioles, sees Ramon Hernandez acquisition on the way to moving Javy Lopez, who, they say is more an offensive catcher, citing that Greg Maddux wouldn't throw to him. Rumor that Darren Erstad could be involved in trade for Javy. Another mistake: hiring LaTroy Hawkins---won't make up for BJ Ryan. On Milton Bradley--Dusty Baker says he deserves another chance. Manny might be a good fit for the Cubs and Dusty. On Soriano, there are precedents:

• Hitter Gary Sheffield moved from infield to outfield
• Hitter Robin Yount moved from infield to outfield

Kevin thinks Frank Robinson will be able to talk to Alfonso, & straighten things out.

Thom Loverro, Wash. Times on Nationals, Orioles

On the Nats, says Jose Vidro isn't tradeable, has injury & high contract. Brad Wilkerson was their biggest chip, but they only should've moved him for a pitcher. In that park, they need a slew of hitters like Nick Johnson, not free swingers like Soriano. Move was in part made following up MLB's Bob DuPuy's ridiculous recent assertion, "The Nationals are not hamstrung." Loverro mentions not many teams were beating down the door to get Alphonso. He might want to rethink his act going into free agency. On the Orioles: no matter what they do, with Angelos as owner, the team will not work. Tejada's normal cheerful demeanor couldn't keep up after Palmeiro's treatment of him.

Baseball Winter Meetings steal "back pages" from football & hockey in the New York, New Jersey area

It's December, & baseball is so hot it's taking successful NFL football & NHL hockey seasons off most of the back pages of the tabloids. The baseball hot stove has everyone running at the slightest syllable, & it doesn't hurt that some teams haven't done much. After all, great columnist Bob Raissman says, negativity sells, even though what the Yankees have been doing is exhibiting patience for a change, which is positive for them.

Tom Verducci from the Winter Meetings on Soriano, & good job by the Rangers

SI's Tom Verducci says Soriano's numbers outside of hitter friendly Arlington were really bad. Nats stadium isn't hitter friendly, & Soriano heading into his free agent year may not be happy. Perhaps Nats will move him. A little attitide adjustment would go a long way for Alfonso, but that's long been said about him to no avail. Tom says Rangers have done well so far, have reduced payroll, overstocked outfield, and poised to move some of that for pitching. He also thinks the Astros should've signed Roger, but his reasons were emotional.

The Nationals already have a 2B in Jose Vidro, so where will Soriano play? Dave notes Soriano may make trouble for the Nats, as he won't want to play the outfield. In addition, the Jose Vidro situation isn't that easy. He has a pretty big contract himself, & performance has been declining. The Soriano move may reflect the Nats' frustration at not being able to get other deals they wanted---they felt they had a chance to get AJ Burnett, & still want pitching. Grady said he'd never met Ned Colletti before being called about this job. Grady wants what's said about the Dodgers next season to be about on-the-field matters, rather than all the other stuff. He says Ned Colletti is a straight shooter, will tell him the truth. Grady made reference to Boston's imposing a "bullpen by committee" on his tenure. The mgmt. then thought a closer did not matter, that the 7th and 8th innings were more important. After Grady left, they brought in an actual closer. The rest, most certainly, is history!

Edes says Grady Little did a tremendous job in Boston--- he turned around the culture of what had been a dismal team--Carl Everett had called Joe Kerrigan a racist; guys who weren't in the starting lineup refused to even put on their uniforms in the club house. The Yankees must make an offer to Bernie Williams by Wednesday, or lose any negotiating rights with him until May 1. The NY Times reports that Bernie is even in attendance at the Winter Meetings. This is interesting to me...Bernie has other talents, is a guitar virtuoso---I believe Paul McCartney was involved with the production of his cd. Yet, here he is in Dallas, in the thick of it. If he wants to play baseball, he could probably do it without showing up at a hotel in Dallas. But, apparently he doesn't just want to play baseball. He wants a particular kind of baseball experience, a kind he feels might not be achieved without the force of his personal presence. Bernie has told people he's in Dallas to meet with a personal trainer about getting in shape for next season. Most wish him well whatever the reason.

I'll take a minor headline today

It's reported that 2003 top draft pick Eric Duncan of the Yankees will begin his next AAA Columbus season at 1B rather than 3B. George King at the NY Post sees this as a way for the soon-to-be 21 year old lefty to move up in the system. There's another story in the Post that goes on about the possibility of Bubba Crosby in center field, which I'm saying no more about. The subject has been more than adequately covered & Bubba will be fine. There is no more money, and there are no available players better than Crosby for the money.

Lupica says Yankees lost $50-$85 million this year

Members of the media and assorted spinmeisters will ignore the truth, but Mike Lupica in his NY Daily News column today reports that the Yankees are losing money--- revenue from Yankee attendance & related income doesn't cover the high cost of the team. The Yankees also pay $110M in revenue sharing and luxury tax. Lupica says the separate entity the YES Network makes money which probably helps cover the difference. However, even that is not all Mr. Steinbrenner's. He owns 60%, while 40% is owned by other investors. And, the network is operating on 100's of millions in loans. The Yankees are giving away money, but can't cover their own expenses. What exactly are the other teams doing with Yankee fans' money? Some are pocketing it. If you want to hate someone, why not hate those people? Answer: maybe because you're lazy.

I love the games reporters play---here digs at Torre, swoons over Arod

Here Jon Heyman of NY Newsday refers to the recent center field flap about Arod and Jeter. He says Torre's words were "undoubtedly born out of frustration or even desperation...before being shot down by general manager, Brian Cashman." He reports that Arod wants to stay at 3rd base, never wants to play shortstop for the Yanks, & thinks Jeter should stay at short. Heyman says Rodriguez "sacrificed his beloved shortstop..." Hey, look, he was compensated--he's not suffering. Man. So Heyman has inside information, without a doubt, as he says, that Torre was so frustrated and desperate in late November of 2005 that he...he made a comment about center field. Heyman also mentions Arod's "well-known fly-ball phobia," as the reason he couldn't possibly be the one shipped out to center field. "Nationals Ballpark Lease in 9th Inning"

Now they're coming up with a crazy bond issue idea as Nationals fans wait in the bottom of the 9th, with DC city council members changing positions. They are scheduled to vote on the idea on December 20th, & if approved, they have to sell almost $300 million in bonds in a period of a few days. Some additional financing would come from Deutsche Bank, which would receive media or stadium revenue in exchange. I'm curious as to the bank balance of MLB itself. Who actually checks up on what MLB does?

Joe Torre's phone call still works

For Kyle Farnsworth, a telephone call from Joe Torre was the big reason he'll set up for Mariano Rivera rather than closing for the Atlanta Braves or the Texas Rangers. "Coming from Joe Torre, you know it's really true," Farnsworth said Friday after agreeing to the 3 year deal. He said he hadn't heard of the Rangers' interest until yesterday.

Kevin Baxter, Miami Herald, says Marlins players make under $500,000

Kevin says no Marlins player will earn over $500,000, with the exception of Dontrelle Willis, who's arbitration eligible. The team has virtually no media money or stadium revenues---few teams could survive under these circumstances. Which makes Loria and his pals at MLB very big gamblers. They moved a mountain, won the World Series, and did it all thinking they'd get a stadium. They didn't figure that politics in MLB don't translate into the real world. Baxter says David Samson has very bad relationships with state politicians, and gee, why should the politicians not give them money "just because they don't like Samson." Well, I hope that's not the case, but if it is, it happens every day in the real world. Baxter also points out that the Miami Heat had spotty attendance before they got Shaquille, & that even when the Dolphins were good, they weren't sold out.

Dibs says Farnsworth really, really signed

After hearing the Rangers were going after Kyle Farnsworth, it wasn't clear he'd end up a Yankee. But Dibs reads he has in fact signed with the Yanks. He was offered a little more money to play for the Rangers, but unlike BJ Ryan, he decided the "stress" of pitching in the Bronx is something he can handle.

Victor Conte takes a shot at Raffy on ABC TV's Nightline--NY Newsday reports

On the eve of reporting to prison, Victor Conte calls "tougher anti-doping policies in MLB: "IQ Testing."" To fail an in-season, announced doping test, Conte explained, "you'd be pretty dumb." He called claims by high profile athletes such as Rafael Palmeiro that they don't use performance-enhancing drugs "literally Academy Award winning performances." (The tests may've been unannounced in the past, but is this still the case)? Conte made his statements on ABC TV's Nightline, which aired early this morning.

According to NY Newsday, Kyle Farnsworth was waiting to see the deals for Tom Gordon & Trevor Hoffman before signing with the Yankees. The Rangers came to the dance late in the evening expressing interest in Farnsworth.

Tom Gordon signs to Phinish for Phillies

The NY Daily News reports Tom Gordon has agreed to a 3 year deal to be the Phillies closer. Said to be for $18 million, a race which was joined by other teams. But the assurance of closing and the 3rd year clinched it for Tom.
