The timeline, & the phone calls...Johnny said he called the team the day before(not sure if he meant the call he made to Francona, which Francona has stipulated, or to another member of team management); Boras called them the day before, one of them called back the next day, but about a different player, etc. Edes says Brian Cashman felt the biggest hurdle was the bond between the fans and Damon. Cashman phoned Damon at one point to get a feel for this.
