Great New England Hurricane of 1938, Milton, Mass. reported sustained wind of 121 mph

"This strong Cat.-3 Hurricane struck several coastal areas of New England in September of 1938 with little warning, killing 256 people and moving at a forward speed over 50 MPH. The Blue Hill Observatory at Milton, Massachusetts reported a sustained wind of 121 MPH with a gust of 183 MPH. Hartford Connecticut had a low pressure reading of 28.04 inches. Just over 2000 people were injured. Damage was around $250-million dollars. (1938-dollars.)"

"Just when investor confidence in the newspaper industry was picking up, the New York Times Co. stopped the turnaround with a surprisingly dismal earnings report Thursday.

New York Times shares lost more than a fifth of their value in a single day and did not rally Friday morning. The markdown spilled over to Gannett and other newspaper stocks as well.

Furthering the gloom, Times’ executives said in a conference call that they expect similarly bad ad trends in the fourth quarter.

So the morning after question is whether the Times’ reversals portend trouble for the industry at large. One could argue (see below) that the Times’ operations and advertising base are so different from most other papers that it should be viewed as an outlier.

But for the last several years, it has been an industry leader, pioneering a successful digital and print subscription model, while wheeling out impressive digital editions on all platforms and expanding internationally.

If the top dog stumbles after a new round of advertising setbacks, the rest of the pack seems even more vulnerable."...

“State Senator Neal Kedzie says his son was attacked while trying to stop someone from stealing his Romney/Ryan yard sign.  Whitewater Police tell NBC15 News this is an active investigation.

Here is the statement released by Senator Neal Kedzie:

Early on Friday morning, October 19th, my son Sean was awakened by noises outside his residence in Whitewater. As he went to see what the commotion was about, he noticed an individual removing a Romney/Ryan yard sign from his property. He yelled to the person that they were taking something not theirs and to return it immediately.

The individual returned the sign, however, a second person confronted and attacked Sean without warning.

Sean was wrestled to the ground by both persons, held down by a constricting chokehold, and struck repeatedly about the face and head.

He nearly passed out from the chokehold and suffered contusions to his face and eyes.

Fortunately, an alert neighbor heard the commotion, scared the individuals away, and called the police.

My wife and I were awakened by a telephone call from Sean’s roommate that Sean had been taken by ambulance to Fort Atkinson Memorial Hospital.

Sean was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital the same day.

As this was a private family matter, we chose not to remark publicly about it and allow law enforcement to do their job. But we understand these types of incidents will eventually become public and questions will arise, particularly in my position as a state legislator.

Sean is still recovering from the injuries he sustained as a result of this beating, and we are confident he will make a full recovery.

But obviously, as parents, we are shaken by this event and very troubled it was apparently initiated and motivated for political reasons.” via Free Republic

It was a whole lot easier hitting home runs against the "whosoever" pitchers during the regular season that just getting a hit against the post season pitchers they face now.

WFAN to simulcast on 101.9 FM beginning late fall 2012

"WFAN will be joining its sports-talk competition on your FM dial. CBS Radio announced yesterday that WFAN will be simulcast on 101.9 FM in the late fall. The move comes four months after ESPN Radio went from the notoriously static-filled 1050 AM to 98.7 FM. In that time ESPN Radio’s ratings, which have consistently lagged well behind WFAN, have doubled.

Even though WFAN is well-established and has a clear signal, the chance to reel in more listeners may have been difficult to resist. It also could improve its position when it comes to retaining the Mets’ radio rights this offseason.

CBS Radio owns WFAN and WCBS, which have the Mets and Yankees games, respectively. Both were set to expire after this season, but the Yankees re-upped with WCBS at the end of August, keeping John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman in the booth.

CBS purchased the rights to the signal from Merlin Media for $75 million.

The 24-hour sports station will continue to air on both AM and FM signals until a plan is developed for 660.

“This is an extremely exciting opportunity to expand our radio presence in the nation’s largest market,” CBS Radio President Dan Mason said in a statement. “Sports is a very popular format and a huge growth category for our business. As a result of this new asset, we look forward to The FAN building on its position as the leading sports radio franchise in the country.”

According to Mason, 101.9 cannot reach 25 states at night, like WFAN-AM can, but that it has a strong signal that emanates from the Empire State Building.

“Anyone would tell you that these two are outstanding signals,” Mason said.
WFAN will continue to be heard on 660 AM “for the foreseeable future,” CBS spokeswoman Karen Mateo said, adding, “For decades, listeners have tuned to WFAN on 660 AM, and we anticipate many of them will continue to do so even after this move.”

WFAN began broadcasting on July 1, 1987 at 1050, replacing country music station WHN. In October 1988, the station moved to 660, a spot previously held by WNBC."
