Returning star Cano deserved better from Yankee fans-Joel Sherman

4/30/14, "Returning star Cano deserved better from Yankees fans," NY Post, Joel Sherman

"There have been many times in the five-plus-year history of this version of Yankee Stadium when the stands have been full, the games have been important and the noise and enthusiasm have been lacking. Many reasons have been cited for how the Stadium got unplugged. Poor acoustics. Rich folks unlikely to deliver much noise being the only ones who could afford seats close to the field. Too many indoor hiding places.

But finally something was unearthed that could stir a full-volume response from a even a quarter-filled stadium — that terrible, evil devil Robinson Cano.

You know he had committed the unpardonable sin of being the Yankees’ best player (by far) for about the past half decade, never was involved in off-field trouble and was well-regarded by his teammates. That horrible, horrible man. I really can’t separate who is the bigger public nuisance, Cano or Donald Sterling.

On a rainy, raw Tuesday night, the reception for Cano was chillier than the weather. He was booed incessantly, relentlessly and virulently from his pregame announcement through each at-bat. The Bleacher Creatures must have forgotten no team in major league history has spent more to import players from elsewhere as the Yankees have when they chanted “YOU SOLD OUT” at Cano.

The 10,000 or so folks who endured the bad weather sounded like four or five times that much with their animus drowning out the few who were trying to offer applause and thanks for the memories. It was as loud as the Stadium has been all year, louder than some playoff games of the recent past.

Overall, the reception was worse than even the Yankees’ play in a 6-3 loss to a poor Mariners team. I almost never comment on fan behavior, unless it is dangerous. But this reaction was so particularly mob-mentality dumb it is hard to ignore.

Cano insisted the booing did not bother him, sticking to pre-planned lines about not being able to control what fans do and not being distracted by the contempt. When asked if he expected better, Cano said, “Not just me, but anybody who goes back to where he used to play.” Instead, he was set upon as if he had committed unpardonable baseball crimes while here....

Is this really about Cano taking the Mariners’ $240 million rather than the Yankees’ $175 million? In case you can’t do math, Seattle’s bid was $65 million more. Was he really supposed to walk away from that to, what, continue playing for these fans who clearly harbored such deep love for him? Also — just for the record — he was severely underpaid on his previous contract with the Yankees

He never said a word about it and I don’t remember the fans offering solidarity and appreciation for that. For in case you missed it or have amnesia, Cano was arguably the most durable player in the game while with the Yankees, and also one of the best. He finished in the top six in the AL MVP voting in each of his past four seasons. This is the list of players who hit at least .300 with at least a .500 slugging percentage in each of the last five seasons: Miguel Cabrera and Cano.

In a broken Yankee 2013, Cano was the biggest reason the team actually contended, serving for most of the season as a one-man difference maker in a lineup that otherwise had more in common with the Long Island Ducks than any Bronx Bomber heritage.

Yet, unlike the Red Sox with Jacoby Ellsbury’s Fenway return, the Yankees decided not to show a highlight appreciation of Cano — a small act by a big operation. And then most of those in attendance for Cano’s first game back decided to give him the worst reception of anyone I can remember returning here. Worse than, for example, Jason Giambi (who was ensnared in BALCO while in pinstripes) or David Wells (who didn’t always show up in the best shape to play).

That it was authored in such a resounding way by such a small crowd only made it more stark. Ultimately, those who braved what Carlos Beltran called the coldest conditions he ever played in turned some wrath toward CC Sabathia and Brian McCann, whose struggles have been central to the Yankees scoring 10 fewer runs through 26 games this season compared to the same juncture with Cano last year.

It will be up to McCann and the new cast the Yankees invested in rather than Cano to energize this offense. If they don’t, perhaps, then the fans might remember just how good Cano actually was. That might not be worth their love. But it should make them ashamed of the kind of hate they offered on Cano’s return."

Yankees win despite getting only 3 hits

4/27/14, Captain chat

4/28/14, "Yankees beat Angels, 3-2, despite getting only three hits," Newsday, Jim Baumbach

"Successful baseball teams usually find some interesting ways to win games. But the Yankees might have shaken their heads in disbelief about how they pushed across the go-ahead run in their 3-2 win over the Angels Sunday night at Yankee Stadium.

In a game that began as a pitchers' duel between two of the game's brightest young righthanders in Masahiro Tanaka and the Angels' Garrett Richards, the Yankees -- who had only three hits -- received plenty of help in the eighth.

After Michael Kohn sandwiched walks to Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran around a strikeout of Derek Jeter to start the inning, lefthander Nick Maronde came in to face Brian McCann. And without McCann even making contact, the Yankees scored the go-ahead run.

"So many things happened, I don't even know," McCann said.

First, Maronde threw a 1-and-0 fastball down the middle for a called strike that catcher Chris Iannetta missed. He looked crossed up on the pitch, expecting a breaking ball. The ball bounced to the backstop, putting runners at second and third.

Then, on a 1-and-2 pitch, Maronde threw a breaking ball that bounced several feet in front of the plate. Iannetta couldn't block that one, either, understandably this time. The ball bounced toward the Yankees' dugout and Ellsbury scored to make it 3-2.

The Yankees thought the speedy Ellsbury got into Maronde's head, affecting his rhythm and comfort in a pressure situation. "It's a hassle watching him on the bases and knowing what he can do, making the pitcher hurry and putting pressure on the catcher,'' Joe Girardi said. "He affects the inning with his speed, no doubt about it.''

Said Mark Teixeira, "Anything to throw off your rhythm, your timing, it's disruptive to the pitcher."

McCann was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and third, but Alfonso Soriano hit into a double play. Nevertheless, the Yankees had all they needed for their 10th win in 14 games, as David Robertson pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.

After striking out Ian Stewart, Robertson got ahead of Iannetta 0-and-2 but walked him to conclude a 10-pitch plate appearance. J.B. Shuck grounded to second and Raul Ibañez couldn't check his swing on a 1-and-2 curveball, striking out to end it.

Earlier, Tanaka struck out 11 in 61/3 innings, although he allowed four extra-base hits, and Richards routinely lit up the radar gun in the high 90s.

At the point that Tanaka departed with one out in the seventh, it was advantage Richards. The Angels were clinging to a 2-1 lead, thanks to a home run by David Freese on Tanaka's first pitch of the sixth, moments after the Yankees had tied it at 1-1.

But Teixeira ensured that the Angels' lead wouldn't last long. Leading off the seventh, he launched a home run into the second deck in right. "I haven't had a swing like that in quite a while," he said, "since before the [wrist] surgery, or before the injury, really, so it's a good sign."

Tanaka entered with only two walks in 291/3 innings but was unusually wild, walking four and hitting a batter. He was at his best when the Angels had runners on base, which was the case in each of his first six innings. "The guy really competes," Girardi said.

The Angels loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but Tanaka got out of it with only one run scoring by getting Shuck to ground into a force at second and striking out Collin Cowgill.

The Yankees tied it at 1 in the fifth when Teixeira walked, reached third on a one-out double by Brian Roberts and scored on Ichiro Suzuki's groundout.

Richards entered with the fastest average fastball in the majors this season at 96 mph. But his fastball to Teixeira came in at 94, and that was enough of a difference for Teixeira to turn on it."

Yankee John Ryan Murphy gets first major league home run and first John Sterling home run call, 'John Ryan sends one flyin''

Saturday, 4/26/14, LA Angels v Yankees at the Stadium, catcher John Ryan Murphy hit his first major league home run in the bottom of the fifth making the score 4-3 Yankees which was also the final score. Following is John Sterling's call:

"Swings and hits one in the air to deep left center field...that ball is gonna be....gone! Over the auxiliary scoreboard! John Ryan Murphy homers right over the auxiliary scoreboard in left center--so John Ryan--sends one flyin', and the Yankees take a 4-3 lead."

Murphy drove in 3 of the 4 Yankee runs.

April 25 is 38th anniversary of Rick Monday saving the American Flag

4/22/2006, "Rick Monday Saved the Flag 30 Years Ago," AP via Washington Post

"Monday was playing center field for the Chicago Cubs on April 25, 1976, at Dodger Stadium when he noticed two protesters kneeling on the grass in left-center, intending to burn the American flag. He immediately bolted toward them and snatched it away.

"I was angry when I saw them start to do something to the flag, and I'm glad that I happened to be geographically close enough to do something about it," said Monday, now in his 13th season as a Dodgers broadcaster.

"What those people were doing, and their concept of what they were trying to do was wrong. That feeling was very strongly reinforced by six years in the United States Marine Corps Reserves. I still think it's wrong to do that."...

Back in '76, Monday was presented with the flag in a ceremony at Wrigley Field by Dodgers executive Al Campanis. It hung in his home in Vero Beach, Fla., until a couple of years ago, when the house sustained severe damage from a hurricane. Now it's in a safety deposit box.

Monday wouldn't say how much the flag is insured for, but "you'd have to add a lot of zeros. People have offered an outrageous amount of money for it _ not that it's for sale."

The Baseball Hall of Fame recently named Monday's quick-thinking act as one of the 100 Classic Moments in the history of the game.

"Whatever their protest was about, what they were attempting to do to the flag _ which represents a lot of rights and freedoms that we all have _ was wrong for a lot of reasons," Monday said. "Not only does it desecrate the flag, but it also desecrates the effort and the lives that have been laid down to protect those rights and freedoms for all of us."

In Peter Golenbock's 1996 book, "Wrigleyville: A Magical History Tour of the Chicago Cubs," former Cubs reliever Darold Knowles recalled what happened in the aftermath of Monday's flag-saving effort.

"That put Rick on the map," said Knowles, a teammate of Monday's for two seasons in Chicago and one in Oakland. "Rick got more recognition out of the flag incident than he got as a player. He was getting letters from all over the country, all the time _ from VFWs (Veterans of Foreign Wars) and American Legions organizations. Every place we'd go, somebody would honor him with a plaque. He let us read some of the letters (from) people thanking him."

Along with the flag, Monday has a copy of the 16-mm footage taken by a fan who was at the game, as well as Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully's play-by-play of the incident. Also among his souvenirs is a copy of the now-famous photo by James Roarke of Monday just as he grabbed the flag.

Monday hit a career-high 32 home runs that season before the Dodgers acquired him from the Cubs with reliever Mike Garman, in exchange for outfielder Bill Buckner and backup shortstop Ivan DeJesus. Monday spent the final eight seasons of his career with Los Angeles, helping the Dodgers win three pennants in a five-year span.

He was the first player chosen in the very first draft back in 1965 after leading Arizona State to a College World Series title. The two-time All-Star put up some impressive numbers during his 19 major league seasons. His ninth-inning home run in the fifth and deciding game of the 1981 NL Championship Series at Montreal catapulted the Dodgers into the World Series, where they beat the Yankees in six games.

But all of that pales in comparison to Monday's most famous achievement in a baseball uniform.

"I know the people were very pleased to see Monday take the flag away from those guys," recalled Manny Mota, Monday's teammate that season and now a Dodgers coach. "I know Rick has done a lot of good things as a player and as a person. But what he did for his country, he will be remembered for the rest of his life as an American hero.""

Newark Bears to hold liquidation auction Saturday morning April 26

4/24/14, "Newark Bears are holding a liquidation auction on Saturday," CBSSports. com, Mike Axisa

"After going 37-63 and finishing last in the five-team independent Canadian American Association of Professional Baseball last season, the Newark Bears folded. The franchise returned in 1999 with a shiny new stadium but attendance and financial woes have forced ownership to shut down and sell everything off.

I'm not joking about selling everything off either. The team will hold a liquidation auction on Saturday morning and everything from lockers to the tarp to concession equipment to lawn mowers to the team bus is available for American dollars. If it's not literally a piece of the ballpark, it's up for auction.

According to the New York Times, the Bears averaged just 500 fans per game last season -- they needed about 2,000 to get by financially -- but that number is generous. In the video below [at link], one member of the team's staff says it was as low as 50 fans a night.

The Bears were stuck competing against several other local pro franchises, including the Yankees and Mets. The team has had several ambitious owners but none could drum up enough fan interest. “What happens when you give away thousands of free tickets and nobody comes? What's that tell you?” said Doug Spiel, the team owner.

The ballpark will be used for college, high school and possibly even little league games for the time being. Other events (such as the auction, will be hosted as well. Newark and Essex County are stuck paying for the stadium through 2029 and will continue to look for a new permanent tenant.

The Bears have had several big name players over the years, including Rickey Henderson, Jose Canseco and Carl Everett. D'Angelo Jimenez was on the roster last year."

Organized crime and drug cartels in Mexico now extend to stealing limes. US gets 97% of its limes from Mexico

4/21/14, "Restaurants take extreme measures to cope with lime crisis," NY Post, Tim Donnelly

"Welcome to the great lime panic of 2014. A huge shortage is the result of a nasty cocktail of conditions in Mexico, where 97 percent of US limes are grown. Heavy rains knocked the blossoms off many trees, reducing yield. A bacteria that’s long been ravaging citrus trees in Mexico didn’t help either, but the real trouble came when criminals and drug cartels started looting the groves and hijacking delivery trucks

A case of limes used to cost as little as $30; prices have shot up to as high as $200. And the limes are smaller — golf-ball-sized fruit that doesn’t produce much juice.

“All of a sudden, this thing I can always have is a product of scarcity,” says Phil Ward, owner and beverage manager of Mexican joint Mayahuel in the East Village. “I don’t think I’ve seen anything like this.”

Even the casual restaurant-goer may have noticed lemons replacing limes on taco plates, lime-based drinks disappearing from menus and lemons making an understudy appearance as cocktail garnishes. Order a Corona? Many bartenders won’t give you a lime unless you demand it.

And so, with the brutal winter finally breaking, the limepocalypse has set off a full-scale panic for bartenders and restaurant owners, with a lime black market of sorts popping up around the city. Some are adding a dollar or two to the cost of a margarita; other spots are taking the hike on the chin, hoping prices drop soon.

“People are basically claiming to be citrus drug dealers,” says Noel, only half-joking: Bartenders report friends from around the country are posting pictures on Facebook of limes wrapped and labeled in plastic bags like pounds of cocaine.

One savvy New Yorker, an air conditioner repairman with friends in the restaurant business, has been driving a rented U-Haul truck to an orchard in Florida and filling it with limes to sell to bars and restaurants in Washington Heights.

“He saw an opportunity to profit from this,” says Esteban Ordóñez, owner of tequila-centric bar Burning Waters Cantina in Greenwich Village, who knows the enterprising lime trucker. “He’s working to prepare A/C units, and he’s getting ready for the summer, and he put one and one together.”

The hauler expanded his operation to two trucks last week, though Ordóñez and other bar workers say that it’s a short-term solution. (The smuggler declined to comment to The Post.)

Ordóñez went on a hunt of his own, driving around Queens and Brooklyn looking for small produce shops that might have a stash. He found one, Patel Brothers in Jackson Heights. The price was $110 for a case of about 200 limes — still costly, but $50 cheaper than his distributor.

“Next time we came back they were out — no limes,” says Ordóñez, who then haggled the owner of a nearby stand down to $135 per case. Still, he was only allowed to buy three.

Everyone is joking about the size of the limes we have now. They look like little pingpong balls,” Ordóñez says. “A lot of people have commented, ‘Is that a real lime?’”"...

Chicago Cubs owners not sure what to do about rooftop Cubs viewing locations v stadium improvements-Newsday

"A contract between the Cubs and the rooftop owners, which runs to 2024, guarantees the baseball team 17 percent of the gross revenues generated by the businesses."...

4/18/14, "Proposed Wrigley Field renovations could send building owners through the roof," Newsday, Steven Marcus

"Jeff Gabbard watches the Cubs in person without actually entering Wrigley Field. Fans can select his vantage point from more than a dozen rooftop businesses beyond the ivy walls.

They pay $60 to $100 to watch the Cubs from 500 feet away because "you basically have an array of food choices, wine and beer, whatever you want," said Gabbard, of Chicago. "Barbecue sandwiches, really nice bratwurst, barbecue ribs." Not to mention nicer bathrooms.

The rooftops -- former residential buildings where occupants could view games just by looking out their windows -- became a cottage industry for landlords in the 1980s but now face an uncertain future under a proposed renovation of Wrigley that could obscure or block views from the rooftops. Conversely, the rooftop businesses are standing in the way of improvements that owner Tom Ricketts wants to make to the 100-year-old ballpark.

Ricketts likened the rooftops to "your neighbor looking through your window watching your television" when he addressed a group at a Cubs convention during the winter.

A $500-million renovation of Wrigley, the team's website said, would include a "6,000-square-foot video board added in leftfield and a 1,000-square-foot sign in rightfield. Advertising is a tremendous source of revenue for all major-league teams and we remain committed to introducing signage in the ballpark that keeps with the historic traditions of Wrigley Field." Signage in Wrigley under the renovation could provide up to a reported $20 million annually for the Cubs.

The Chicago City Council has approved the renovation of the city landmark, but the Cubs reportedly are reluctant to implement it because they fear it would be delayed if the rooftop owners seek legal action.

A contract between the Cubs and the rooftop owners, which runs to 2024, guarantees the baseball team 17 percent of the gross revenues generated by the businesses. That amounts to an estimated $3 million to $4 million per season, according to Ryan McLaughlin, a spokesman for the Wrigleyville Rooftops Association." Carlos Beltran gets first John Sterling home run call-Updated with "Correazo" clarification by commenter, 'a blow with a leather strap or thong'. Updated 4/12/14, 4/13/14, with Beltran's 2nd, 3rd, +++ Yankee HR, stays with 'correazo'

7/3/14, Carlos Beltran hit a 3 run home run v Minnesota Twins in the top of the fifth. John Sterling stayed with the

"Un.............CORREAZO by Beltran! A 3 run blast!"

============================

6/29/14, Carlos Beltran hit a solo home run v Red Sox at the Stadium in the bottom of the 4th making the score 4-3 Red Sox. John Sterling stayed with his original Beltran tag:

"Un....CORREAZO......by Beltran!!!"

Related: This is an ESPN game. Local Yankee radio on WFAN with John and Suzyn is at least ten seconds ahead of ESPN's TV broadcast. Some prefer exact simulcasts but I find it very interesting to know what's going to happen before the players and commentators on tv do. When they finally "catch up," you get to experience a big moment twice. Or, if it's a moment you'd like to forget, you can turn the tv off and never see it.

--------------------------------

6/20/14, Carlos Beltran hit a 3 run walk off home run v Orioles. John Sterling didn't do the "un correazo" this time. As a game-ender perhaps it had a built-in abundance of description, though Mr. Sterling did say, "Beltran Belted One," as he described Yankee teammates greeting Beltran at the plate. Final 5-3 Yankees over Orioles at the Stadium. Time of game, 3:38.

---------------------------------------

4/13/14, Carlos Beltran hit a 2 run home run at the Stadium v Red Sox, Sunday night. Final, 3-2 Yankees. John Sterling's call:

"It is high, it is far, it is gone! Carlos Beltran drilled one into the left field seats, a two run home run! Un correazo by Beltran, and the Yankees take a 2-1 lead."

--------------------------------------------

4/12/14, John Sterling stayed with "correazo" for his second Beltran call, 1st inning, 2 run HR v Red Sox, final 7-4 Yankees:

"Swung on there it goes! Deep right center it is high, it is far, it is gone! Oh what a shot by Beltran to deep right center field. Un correazo by Beltran, and the Yankees take a 2 nothing lead."
.
===========================

John Sterling's first call of a Carlos Beltran home run, Wed., April 9, 2014, bottom of the second, Orioles at Yankees, final 5-4 Orioles:

"Swung on and hit in the air to deep right. That ball is high, it is far, it is gone. Second deck! Carlos Beltran gets his first of the year, a long home run in the second deck. Une coriaso [Guessing at spelling] by Beltran!"

"Correazo - a blow with a leather strap or thong." Thanks to Commenter Tony Reyes

Here's link to "correazo" definition kindly provided by Tony Reyes.

---------------------------------

Comment: I've tried to find a Spanish translation for "une coriaso" under various spellings or even "uno" coriaso, and found nothing even close. I taped the call from the Yankee radio post game show. The new post game host Sweeny Murti didn't offer any ideas as to what it means.

Hank Aaron compares Republicans who oppose Obama to KKK

4/9/14, "Hank Aaron Compares Republicans That Oppose Obama To KKK," atlanta.cbslocal.com, AP

GOP Spkr. and Obama, May 2011

"Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron compared Republicans that oppose President Barack Obama to the Ku Klux Klan.

Speaking to USA Today Tuesday on the 40th anniversary of his then record-breaking 715th home run, the 80-year-old Aaron said that Republicans are hindering Obama’s job performance.

Sure, this country has a black president, but when you look at a black president, President Obama is left with his foot stuck in the mud from all of the Republicans with the way he’s treated,” Aaron told USA Today Sports.

Aaron continued: The bigger difference is that back then they had hoods. Now they have neckties and starched shirts.

Aaron stated that there is still room for improvement for race relations in the U.S.

“We have moved in the right direction, and there have been improvements, but we still have a long ways to go in the country,” Aaron told USA Today Sports."...via Lucianne

Comment: Mr. Aaron, you've fallen for spin. Republicans actually love Pres. Obama and want the same things he wants. If they sometimes pretend to oppose Mr. Obama or democrats it's just to try and fool Republican voters. Republicans can't stand voters. Republicans and Democrats are on the same side. The GOP very badly wanted Pres. Obama to be re-elected.

GOP House Speaker Boehner was desperate for Pres. Obama to be re-elected. Boehner told Republicans they "lost badly," it was time to do what Obama wanted:

Mr. Aaron, there's only one functioning political party today. If a Republican looks like he's going to win, other Republicans sabotage him. These people have been a joke for decades.

GOP Sen. McConnell congratulates Pres. Obama after State of the Union

Added: Hank Aaron does have family interest in politics. He's the brother in law of Democrat Rep. David Scott of Georgia.  Unfortunately, in 2008, Rep. Scott was named among the 25 most corrupt members of congress by a liberal democrat watchdog group called CREW that more often blames Republicans for corruption. More on CREW: "Likewise, a Democracy Alliance [rich liberal democrat group, per Wash. Post] blessing effectively jump-started Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW). It bills itself as a nonpartisan watchdog group committed to targeting "government officials who sacrifice the common good to special interests." Alliance officials see CREW as a possible counterweight to conservative-leaning Judicial Watch, which filed numerous lawsuits against Clinton administration officials in the 1990s."

Some services advising internet users to change all their passwords due to Heartbleed bug

4/9/14, "'Change every password everywhere': Heartbleed's threat to Web security," AP via Globe and Mail, M. Liedtke, A. Jesdanun, San Francisco

"Some popular sites that may have been affected: The CRA, Yahoo, Flickr, OkCupid, Eventbrite, Indiegogo, Imgur."...

-----------------------------------------

4/9/14, "A digital heart attack," economist.com, San Francisco

"The Heartbleed Bug sounds like a particularly nasty coronary complication. But it is in fact a software flaw that has left up to two-thirds of the world’s websites vulnerable to attack by hackers.

According to researchers who uncovered the bug in popular encryption software, it can be exploited by nefarious types—and prying spooks—to extract everything from user names and passwords to details of people’s bank accounts and corporate secrets.

Since the bug’s existence was publicly revealed on April 7th, companies have been scrambling to install software patches that fix the flaw or to upgrade to newer versions of the encryption software, which do not contain it. Tumblr, a blogging service owned by Yahoo, has been advising users to change their passwords for all of the secure sites that they use that hold sensitive data.

Expect many other web outfits to issue similar warnings soon.

Ironically, the weakness that has been exposed is in software that was designed to make the internet safer. Secure websites typically have web addresses that begin with HTTPS, in which the S refers to SSL, or Secure Socket Layer, a widely used technology that encrypts data before it is sent. (Users can see a little lock icon at the start of a web address when they visit a website that employs the technology.)

To protect themselves and their users, many sites have turned to OpenSSL, a popular library of open source encryption software. The snag is that one version of this software that has been on sale since March 2012 contains a serious coding error. The software has a “heartbeat” feature, which lets a computer at one end of an encrypted link send a signal to the computer at the other end of it to check that it is still online. Codenomicon, a security firm, and Neel Mehta of Google’s security team, discovered that a savvy hacker can exploit a weakness in the code and replicate this signal, using it to trick a server into spewing out data from its memory.

Savvy hackers can then use software to comb through the data to extract passwords and other sensitive information. They can also get their hands on encryption keys which can be used to decipher encrypted traffic flowing to and from the computer. To make matters worse, the researchers found that the Heartbleed Bug allows attacks to be mounted without leaving a trace in server logs, so victims may well be unaware that their systems have been compromised. This means it is impossible to tell exactly how much damage has been done because of the flaw’s existence.

Sometimes news of bugs leaks out before software patches are available to fix them. In this case, however, the researchers tipped off the relevant folk associated with OpenSSL about their findings before going public with them, which meant that by the time the news broke software fixes were to hand. Even so, some firms clearly needed more time to prepare themselves.

The revelation of the Heartbleed Bug's existence will trigger more discussion about how best to deal with security flaws that are unearthed by researchers. It will also reinforce the impression amongst the general public that cyberspace cannot be trusted. In response, the software industry should redouble its efforts to stop serious flaws being introduced into code when it is written. That will not be easy, but it is time to make a wholehearted push to see what’s possible."
