Barry Axelrod, Jeff Bagwell's agent on XM

Astros appear likely to file insurance claim saying Bagwell unable to play. Question asked why the January 31 insurance deadline? No one knows. Bagwell has always said spring training was a more realistic time frame to assess his abilities. It appears Bagwell will get his salary no matter what. This insurance filing shows the Astros want some money & they don't want Bagwell on the roster. Bagwell's shoulder has been bad for several years with degenerative arthritis. In a later interview with Will Carroll on XM, it's mentioned that the insurance carrier is Lloyds of London.

Jeff Passan, Kansas City Star on revenue sharing

Following his recent article in the Kansas City Star, Jeff notes, "low payrolls haven't stopped the value of the franchise from doubling since David Glass bought it." McClatchy has had a similar experience with its ownership of the Pirates. (When these profits are realized upon sale, is a percentage sent back to teams that gave them revenue sharing?)These teams need to develop their own players. Glass: "Every dollar received goes into baseball operations." Why doesn't anyone ask him exactly what that means? Answer: Because it keeps this charade going. Says MLB will be making a big, new tv deal after this year, suggesting some want this money to be pooled.

BP's Will Carroll joins Jeff Erickson on XM

Will & Jeff discuss the Arizona Diamondbacks, starting with favorite Chris Young, who Will says has great Pecota. May see him by mid-season, great speed & defense, takes walks, reducing SO's, Eric Byrnes keeping outfield spot warm til he gets there. On the legendary El Duque, has had stellar moments, but not sure about depending on him as a 2-3 starter. Infielders Craig Counsell & Orlando Hudson will be great help for pitchers Brandon Webb & Dustin Nippert, who's coming off Tommy John surgery. Will mentions 1 out of 9 pitchers has elbow problems, & how could these injuries be prevented. Diamondbacks have catcher Johnny Estrada, but he has lingering back problems. Brandon Lyon very talented but has some health problems. Great prospects: Stephen Drew, JD Drew's younger brother. Justin Upton, recipient of richest minor league deal of all time (Jeff & Will say he's worth it). But will he thrive if they move him from SS to 3B. Carlos Quentin is good outfield prospect. Veterans Luis Gonzalez & Shawn Green are on the downside. Tomorrow, Jeff will discuss the Colorado Rockies.

Padres sign Piazza for 1 year

The Padres offered $2 million including incentives & told Mike they wanted him to be a big part of their team. It seems some baseball writers like this guy---from what I've observed the past several years, he's a major drag in every way. The line some of them have about 'the Yankees were interested' is really funny. Maybe they own some of his memorabilia.

Then why not the "Brooklyn Dodgers of Los Angeles?"

This suggestion in John Thorn's article makes the most sense. See, I've lived in terror of the Anaheim Angels since 2000. They've always been a very big deal to me. I've never been to Anaheim, but apparently the team's owner doesn't think it's a good enough place. That would never have occurred to me had he not brought it up. As a baseball fan with a cable tv package, I can get to know teams all across the country. Mr. Moreno, I understand Green Bay, Wisconsin is a small town. So what? What a distraction for a great team that was great before Moreno got there.

They announce Jenkins has won the annual TONY CONIGLIARO AWARD, given for overcoming adversity with spirit & courage. Aaron came close to dying from a blood or heart disorder resulting in serious surgery. He's been a successful pitcher in the thin air of the Rockies since then. They both sounded like humble, devoted, hard working individuals, & I wouldn't have known their stories without XM Channel 175.

Pedro had alerted Red Sox when Ortiz was leaving Twins

I didn't know that Pedro had alerted Red Sox management that hiring David Ortiz would be a good idea. By the way, I understand congratulations are in order. Pedro has recently married an ESPN reporter in the Dominican Republic. Buck Martinez says Yankees "can" spend more---more media lies about Yankees

This is just too simple to disprove. And, not worthy of Buck Martinez. In general conversation this morning on XM, he made the usual reference that the Yankees "can" spend more. First, Buck, many teams "can" spend more, but choose to put the money in their pocket. This has been proved so many times, but why do Buck & others still say it? Because no one stops them. The owners of XM don't stop him. It feeds hate & envy, which is the cheapest way to win people over. Worse, it takes the focus off WHAT IS BEING DONE BY TEAMS RECEIVING REVENUE SHARING? Alan (Bud) Selig put through his grand social policies helping smaller teams. Do you know the names of the owners of these teams & how much they got & what they did with it? Probably not. Also, some players won't go to the Bronx for any amount of money--they don't want the "stress." If they had signed Carlos Beltran, how much would they have paid in luxury tax? $40 million. Why not check out exactly where all the taxes & revenues are going? Answer: Because it's easier to hate someone.

Jonny Gomes on XM with Dibs & Kevin

Talking about player physicals, Devil Rays' Jonny Gomes had a heart attack at age 23. On Christmas Eve, 2003, he thought he had indigestion, finally went to a doctor the next day, found out he'd been having a heart attack for 27 hours. He obviously still does a tremendous job & plays hard. (Dibs & Kevin mention Larry Lucchino said his team doesn't usually give physicals to players it obtains in trades). Jonny says the Rays have sold more tickets for the upcoming season than they did for the whole year in 2005. Lots of improvements to the stadium experience, including free parking & ability to bring one's own food. February 11 will be Jonny Gomes Day in Petaluma, California where he played little league. Proceeds will go to charity. Gomes finished 3rd in ROY voting.

Jeff Blair, Toronto Globe & Mail on the Blue Jays on XM

All kinds of threads here resulting in an energized fan base. On the WBC, though Canada doesn't have many players, they're all very loyal & eager to play. Each has had to come up through Baseball Canada, not a large organization, but one that helped them a lot & earned their dedication. Jeff feels the owner, Rogers Communications, doesn't care much about baseball, just doesn't want to lose money. As it happens, the Toronto Raptors & Maple Leafs aren't doing well, which may help fan interest in the Jays. Acknowledging cost of recent signings, some feel Jays have to pay a little extra to account for families moving to a different country, but that JP Ricciardi has done much to mitigate that.

Jeff asks John about Rays' best pitching prospects: Jeff Nieman, drafted from Rice in 2004, 6'9", very good but has health concerns; Jason Hamel, not as good as Nieman, but a 3-4 starter. That's not what Brian Cashman said, Kevin

Brian Cashman was interviewed in the 3pm hour with Dibble & Kennedy on XM on Wednesday. He was asked his opinion about Guillermo Mota's reported flunking his physical with the Indians. Brian said he had no idea about it, no information about it. Kindly, not to leave the XM lads with dead air, he went on that these situations can be very elaborate, and tend to be moreso every year. He told some of his past experiences with medical reports, citing an example several years ago of a player who broke his toe after having been offered in a trade. Fine.
  • But Kevin & Dibs had Orestes Destrade on later in the show, discussing a few subjects. On the Mota deal, Kevin says to Orestes, "Brian Cashman said 'who knows if the Red Sox even gave Mota a physical." To which Orestes responded, "Whoaaaa," or "Wowwww," as if that were quite a statement/insinuation, etc. Which it might have been had Cashman actually said that.
  • They re-played their interview with Brian Cashman afterwards, sometime before 6pm, & Brian made no such statement. He only said in general terms, "Who knows if teams give/gave physicals." He could've meant the Marlins, Red Sox or Indians. It never occurred to me that he meant the Red Sox. Would any half smart general manager say that about a particular team? Of course not.
Why would Kevin Kennedy attribute such a crazy statement to Brian Cashman? Especially when proof to the contrary is so close at hand?

Joe Sheehan with Jeff Erickson on XM

Joe is co-founder of Baseball Prospectus & he & Jeff discuss the Yankees system. Joe made the kind of comment so many make for purposes like ingratiating themselves with other groups, perhaps trying to seem 'with-it,' or on board with the rest of the sports media, including any voting baseball writers. That is to state something utterly untrue about the Yankees that furthers their image as pigs, obscenely rich, cruelly superior to other teams, etc. Sheehan said: "Jeff Nelson would take 3 months off in the summer simply because the Yankees were planning their playoff" schedule/bullpen or roster. If someone wants to try the excuse he's just being funny, forget it. It's far from funny. It's what I described, especially since I've read Joe considers himself a Yankee fan. This kind of thing has gone on because Yankee fans have allowed themselves to be bullied. It's not right, it's got to stop. Real human beings are harmed by the kind of pandering Sheehan attempted in his statement. And it keeps people misinformed about the state of baseball today.

Noting what Dibs & Kevin say

I was having an otherwise nice day on Monday, but they had to bring up Mariano Rivera. If it's a good day, they don't mention him. On any other kind of day, I have to prepare for some negatively slanted material, as I've documented here. Dibs says he's learned a lot since he's been doing this show. Maybe, maybe not. Now that all the awards are over with, & after no doubt other friends have explained reality to him, Dibs opens the show with some positive words about Mo-- which were just facts he's ignored in the past. He's one of those whose main purpose in life is to see that Mo doesn't get the credit he deserves. Then, Kevin adds his usual negative comment about Mo: "We saw him as a starter against us in Boston in 1995, & we knocked him out the 2nd time through the batting order. Then he setup for Wetteland, & became closer in 1997." Again, Kevin, I've written you about this, but you & others are apparently free to ignore the facts. That's not quite how it went. In 1995, Mariano made his first of 11 STRAIGHT YEARS OF POST SEASON PITCHING, & it was electric by any account. During the 1995 ALDS, he appeared after your guy Wetteland. Mariano pitched in 3 GAMES, 2 OF WHICH HE FINISHED. HE FACED 20 BATTERS, & HAD AN ERA OF 0.00.
  • Of course, Dibs did mention the STANDARD ESPN LINE USED TO DISMISS MARIANO RIVERA: "HE'S HAD ALL THOSE OPPORTUNITIES." Guys, if you read the papers, you'll see PLENTY OF GUYS DON'T WANT THE STRESS OF PLAYING IN NEW YORK. IN OTHER WORDS, THEY ALSO HAD THE 'OPPORTUNITY,' BUT CHICKENED OUT. How about that?

Glaus had frequent health issues, & "there were problems in the clubhouse that still need to be addressed." He doesn't elaborate. Team decided to regroup & go younger. Doesn't see them manufacturing runs as they might, as they don't steal bases. There's a hardcore fan base, but occasional fans have dwindled, & team still has debts to pay off from world series winning payroll. Very high on Craig Counsell & Orlando Hudson. Grady Sizemore looks good in real baseball, but not in fantasy. They're not high on Eric Duncan, think he's being pumped up to trade. Liken Melky Cabrera to Ricky Ladee, a 4th outfielder, though Ladee was a better hitter. Jeff is high on Curtis Granderson.

Miguel hesitated approaching Sammy while an Oriole, fearing he'd be rebuffed. This from a Dominican news service today. Chris DeLuca, Chicago Sun Times on why Cubs fans feel the way they do

Chris says fans are happy about Juan Pierre, but were hoping for another star addition when the Furcal deal didn't work out. Many thought Miguel Tejada would be the next acquisition, but that now seems a dead issue. The recent Cubs fan fest showed some impatience toward Dusty Baker, Chris says, but even more at Jim Hendry. They know the owners have money, it's a $100 million payroll, & they didn't expect it to end with Jacques Jones. Also, overall view is that the team didn't execute fundamentals in 2005, poor baserunning, missing signs, etc. Even with injuries the team sustained, some felt remaining players gave up.

Marc Topkin, St. Pete Times on XM

Devil Rays' first priority was to get young starting pitching, which is what they got in the trade of Danys Baez & Lance Carter to the Dodgers. I feel the Devil Rays played extremely well last year, were amazing to watch as individuals & as a team. It's too bad they couldn't have kept Baez & added to that. They agreed Chuck Tiffany has a big upside. Danys is an upgrade over Sanchez, prefers to close over setting up, & may get chances to do so if Gagne isn't available. Lance Carter may have more opportunities to contribute with the Dodgers than he did with the Rays.

John Donovan, SI, on the Beat with Charley Steiner

Discussing the loss of African Americans in baseball:
  • It's been a decline over about 20 years, & will take that long to get them back, if ever.
  • The young people would have to be convinced to play baseball instead of doing something else, programs like RBI notwithstanding. The game is passed from person to person.
  • It takes the availability of bats, gloves, and a somewhat playable field (although some of today's current pro stars used cardboard milk cartons as gloves).
  • The growing number of Latin players has created more competition.

Jeff Erickson's Fantasy Focus with Jason Gray on XM

Jeff discusses the Chicago White Sox today with guest Jason Gray of Mastersball.com & MLB. Both agree the World Champs got even better: both like Rob Makowiack at 2B, Jim Thome provides potential of lefty bat that was lacking. Conservatively estimate him to do .260 with 30 HR. Giving up Aaron Rowand shows the owner has confidence in Brian Anderson who spent all of '05 in AAA. If he doesn't pan out, they have Jerry Owens to back him up. Javy Vazquez is better than his 4+ ERA would indicate, will have better defense in Chicago, has changed his grip on his fastball. Brandon McCarthy is ready to start now, but may not get a chance unless someone else moves down.

Bob Grant, radio legend

Bob Grant didn't like baseball from what I could tell. But I learned about many other things from listening to him for the past 20 years. Of course, he started in talk radio reportedly 58 years ago, via Chicago, LA, then New York. He popularized "telephone" talk radio when he found an engineer who figured out how to hook up a phone call so a host & listener could hear it. I taped the last hour of Bob's show today on WOR radio, & guess who called in to salute him? Howard Stern. As a Bob Grant listener, I knew that Howard liked him, & I was happy he called to honor Bob. Bob retired today, but those of us who learned so much from him for so long will be listening to hear his voice again.
  • UPDATE, 11/11/08: At 8:10 PM Monday night I tuned in to hear Bob, but no Bob. Instead, unhappily, Curtis Sliwa. I read on a message board that Bob had said he'll be out this week, so I hope he will in fact be back next week. (sm)

Ken Rosenthal, voter, on XM, & predictions

Ken thinks the "voting process is fine, if you start changing the process you disrupt it." Writers don't have connections to teams, aren't paid by them. But, that's only 1 aspect. Do Boston Globe writers vote? Their paper owns 17% of a team (Red Sox). How many other newspapers also own parts of baseball teams? Charley elicits that it's the HOF that doesn't want to release ballots. Even though Ken & other individual writers do so, the HOF maintains a "secret society." Not for long, guys. As did Tim Kurkjian, Ken says if you look at the veterans' committee voters, we look great, because they can't agree on anything. That fact doesn't change the problem. Ken mentions Miguel Tejada doesn't have a no-trade clause, thinks Jeff Weaver will do well.

EDDIE ANDLEMAN- Boston's Godfather of Sports radio on XM

Charley talks about the Red Sox with Eddie, who says:
  • The Red Sox are now in the real estate business, buying property around Fenway. It's become more important to them than baseball.
  • Owners feel they're playing with house money having won it all in 2004.
  • Eddie doesn't see the strength up the middle on the field that a winning team needs.
  • There's a push to get Fenway designated a national historic site. Owners will get 20% tax break on all improvements, AND will control property 200 yards out from the stadium.
  • Eddie predicted for 2 years that Theo would leave. Says he could see him with the Nationals if that thing ever gets straightened out.
  • Owners think "dumb hicks in New England will be happy" since we won on '04.
  • Eddie will go to Vegas as he does every year and bet the Red Sox to win it all.

Stumbleupon StumbleUpon

Tim Kurkjian, 17 year voter, on with Charley Steiner

"This is our reward for covering all the games we did," Tim Kurkjian on the vote remaining exactly as it is. Qualified writers are dropping from their ranks everyday, but that doesn't bother him. Tim says several times that it's "difficult, harder than you'd think, not easy," and Charley agrees but says that's not the point. There's no written rationale for each vote in one place permanently. No accountability. Yet we're allowed to see tears, extended families wrenched with emotion, some who win, others who lose, deserving players slapped in the face & sent to their room without explanation.
  • Kurkjian thinks this is a reward and that he has earned it.
The reward is that voters themselves are talked about. People who've chosen careers as a paid parasites become famous because they have secrets. Baseball is now on radio 24 hours a day, 365 days a year along with just about any amount of information on the internet that a baseball analyst could need. Tim mentions a big flap came up at the last BBWAA meeting: THE WRITERS AT MLB.COM WERE STOMPING THEIR FEET, WANTING TO GET IN ON THE VOTE, but the "regular writers" said no, many of you guys are too closely related to the team. In New York a baseball writer's first priority is to get on ESPN. If he reports on the Yankees his other priorities are to get Yankee management to use them to attack a Yankee player in the press and to get a Yankee player to say or do something that could be used to humiliate him or cause controversy. If he is selected once every few years to vote in a post-season baseball award, he will help his career by not voting the Yankee player #1, such as one did in 2006 by not voting Jeter #1 for MVP. Bud Selig likes that. Assuming for a moment a writer liked the Yankees and not the Mets, he would gain nothing from the team for a vote, not least because Yankee management (to the extent it exists) is fragmented and focused elsewhere. It would be better for one's long term career prospects to withhold immortality from Yankee players (other than Arod). There are few enough ballots in AL awards that outcomes are easy to pad and manipulate up or down. It may be different in other markets. The point is, "being too close to a team" can't often be policed. And how does a "biased" human being transform overnight to a model of purity and morality simply by being told by Jack O'Connell that he has a vote? How exactly does that happen?

Ken Rosenthal wants no changes in HOF voting, but he may have no choice

Rosenthal responds to recent calls for HOF voting to let the sun shine in. His answer is NO. I very much appreciate the work Mr. Rosenthal does in providing information and analysis. But, the battle he puts up here to defend his turf is surprisingly empty, & makes me suspicious of him. For the first time following an HOF or CY Young vote, we have 24 hour a day, 365 days a year baseball radio stations, plus just about as much access to baseball information as he has. We are taking back this process. I'm posting Ken's article here. Rosenthal says the writers have long "coveted" the idea of baseball voting. After seeing the tears, the families involved, the millions of dollars not just to the player or team, but from all of us fans who get jacked around---this is not a thing that should be "coveted."

Another cheap headline that misses the point badly

The opening salvo of the Fox.com article grabs everyone who wants to hate. Or, who doesn't have the time or inclination to read much about the subject---or even to the end of the article. Because, even if they make it to the end of this article, they'll finally find a small mention of the bigger problem---you have no idea what's being done with these financial gifts to other teams. You don't address how to solve this, you don't even have a real desire to solve this. SOME OWNERS TODAY HAPPILY PUT THIS MONEY IN THEIR POCKET. DON'T YOU THINK IT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM FIRST, INSTEAD OF JUST GIVING THEM MORE AND MORE MONEY? I guess that would be harder than throwing out another headline grabber about Steinbrenner and the Yankee payroll. There is meaningful information available on this subject, but most writers like this one at Fox.com overlook it and go for the cheap, hate-grabbing headline.

Now, TV & radio are all over the country, there are broadcasters with more knowledge than writers--not to say any group is perfect. But, as Boston Globe's Bob Ryan says, it must change. Dibs says most important areas of life have checks & balances but this system doesn't, which is wrong for something of this consequence. He says 30 GUYS ELIGIBLE TO VOTE THIS YEAR DIDN'T VOTE..... 12 BALLOTS WERE LEFT BLANK. There should be a panel to oversee the situation. Kevin: maybe MLB says this isn't their area, it's the HOF committee's area..... doesn't matter. It must be addressed.

Bruce Sutter interview with Dibs & Kevin on XM:

Sutter says he broke down & cried when he heard the news; he's very happy, but upset that Goose & Bert didn't win. Bruce: 'Voters are just starting to recognize our position of closer. I'm pulling for Goose & Lee Smith. Voters compare our stats to starters, which is not right. They don't compare a 1st baseman's stats with a shortstop's. ' Says he wouldn't have made it to the big leagues without the split finger fastball. Kevin remarks, "You also did very well in the World Series." Sutter: "Well, of course they didn't have Rollie Fingers in that game, he was injured. Of course, if you gave me the NY Yankees today, & I could take 1 guy off the team, IT WOULD BE MARIANO RIVERA." Dibs' response: Dead Silence. Kevin finally says, ".....That's right." Dibs mentions Sutter pitched over 100 innings a season 5 times in his career, & Sutter said that's how we did it in those days. You have to build your arm up. Then, regarding the closer or late inning reliever who pitches more than the stereotyped 1 inning, Sutter says: "You see Mariano Rivera do it all the time in the post season & the "must-win" games, he comes on in the 8th inning." Response from Dibs & Kevin: silence, and changed the subject. Sutter says he made $17,000 his first year in the big leagues. He is feeling more emotional about it than he thought he would---says he's not that type of person. But, he's with his family in Pennsylvania, he has 3 sons, 2 of whom are coaching high school or college baseball. Congratulations to Bruce Sutter, Hall of Fame, and we look forward to seeing him in Cooperstown.

Bob Ryan, Boston Globe, Reports his HOF votes:

  1. Jim Rice
  2. Bruce Sutter
  3. Dave Concepcion
Ryan said he kept his vote down for the purpose of protecting Rice. Is surprised Gossage hasn't received more support from NY area voters (as Rice has from New England voters). Good that closers have opened up after the pioneer class of Rollie Fingers & Hoyt Wilhelm. Ryan is in favor of a Hoyt Wilhelm Award for closers on the level of Cy Young. (Question, Bob: This move would go against the personal interests & agendas of majority of current voters, so who would shepherd this through?) Ryan: "THE MANIPULATION & JEALOUS GUARDING OF POWER BY TODAY's BBWAA IS CRIMINAL. THE IDEA THAT SOMEONE LIKE VIN SCULLY IS NOT ALLOWED TO VOTE IS PREPOSTEROUS. THIS SYSTEM SHOULD BE CHANGED IMMEDIATELY." Bob says, "We the writers are the dinosaurs. We're on the way out. Broadcasters should be included" in voting.

Alan Schwarz----Recent access to research allows late inning relievers credit they've deserved

Alan: people have mistakenly assumed so-called closers were only 1 inning pitchers, as Eckersley was. They didn't look at the facts, eg. Goose Gossage had 4.7 outs/save. (Lee Smith had 3.2 outs/ save, & Eckersley 3.3 outs/save). Alan uses free services like retrosheet. In the case of Jim Rice, he looks at home/road splits: Rice ops home=.920; ops away=.789, etc. Steiner asks why so many voters change their votes over the years. Schwarz answer: "They're foolish." They don't do the homework required. Alan writes for the NY Times, whose employees aren't allowed to vote on baseball awards.

Jeff Erickson plays Billy Bean interview with Joe Castellano

Billy says he was actually surprised at the great success of Huston Street, turning into a lights-out closer his 1st year AND winning ROY. Billy credits his scouting dept. for finding Street & convincing Beane that he should come up. Also pleased they drafted Bobby Crosby--they got a great hitter & top defensive short stop. On Rich Harden, of course he was on dl at end of year, a great loss to the team with a pulled ribcage. Beane mentions Harden is a WORKOUT MANIAC-- doesn't say this is what did it, but that sometimes happens. Joe asks Billy about the idea of "chemistry," somewhat controversial in Moneyball. Note to all: Billy's answer is exactly the same as Joe Torre's has always been (sorry): "You have it when you win."

Jeff Erickson on XM with Lawr Michaels discusses the A's

Lawr was surprised at acquisition of Loaiza, but Billy Beane says it gives depth they didn't have last year. Shows maybe more money & slight shift in philosophy. Jeff & Lawr say Blanton has best upside in the group. Milton Bradley usually has 'honeymoon' period with a new team; the team and the area they deem to be more "cerebral," which may be better for Bradley. Moves this off season enable them to put good lineup against both righties & lefties. They don't see Frank Thomas going to the A's. On the Farm System, good prospects coming up: Mellillo & Pennington; 2 catching prospects Suzuki & Brown. Looking for 2 more good years for Kendall. Lawr is with CreativeSports.com, & Jeff is with Rotowire.com.Re Rafael Furcal's reported surgery, Jeff's not changing his fantasy status at this time.

Marlins president visits Portland, Oregon

Sounds like another case of the tail wagging the dog. The mayor of Portland is telling you his town's not interested. Period. If some "legislators" feel differently, we understand. But, first of all, the stadium would have to be domed. It rains frequently in Oregon....the same problem you had in South Florida. You need a big fan base that won't get rained on. Move on.

Thinks there's some truth to "government in exile," with Theo working on the side with the 2 co-gm's, who then take ideas to John Henry. Steve thinks very highly of Ben & Jed & their future in baseball, but current set-up doesn't allow them to be in the best light. Good chance that Red Sox will get Julio Lugo for short stop, but may bring up current minor league guys for CF. Curt Schilling is reportedly dedicated to a workout regimen this off-season, & has been quiet otherwise. The team would probably like to retain the services of David Wells; Steve says the Sox can't keep giving guys up for less money than they paid, eg. letting Wells go west.

Dave Sheinin, Washington Post on XM re Nats

Dave's opinion is D.C. will eventually agree to the stadium, since it would cost them too much to go to arbitration. Thinks MLB has the edge. Murray Chass, NY Times, on XM with Charley Steiner

Murray would vote for Jack Morris: was dominant in his era, won the most games, & was great in the post season, where it means most & is harder to win. Would probably vote for Gossage & Sutter. Says must look beyond the simple saves stat that was popularized around Eckersley's time, & look to the extra innings, the tougher situations that other late inning relievers have been in & what they've done for their teams. When Murray was a voter, he only voted for 2-4 candidates. He doesn't vote now, as employees of the NY Times aren't allowed to vote in baseball awards.

Matthew Berry joins Jeff Erickson discussing Los Angeles Angels

Matthew notes Angels pitching coach is a 'genius,' who had 3 guys in top 10 in ERA in the American League! This year, Jared Weaver may come to camp. Pitching lineup is still tremendous: Colon, Escobar, Lackey, Santana, & Hector Corrosco. Matt likes trade for bullpen lefty JC Romero. Both Jeff & Matt like Scott Shields, in real life & fantasy. One minor league jewel, Brandon Wood, has been compared to Pujols & Vlad. At catcher, Jeff Mathis & Jose Molina will tandem. If Erstad remains at 1st, Kotchman ∨ McPherson would DH or Kotchman could play 1st. Erstad is loved for his speed & leadership, but not for bat or OBP. Chone Figgins will be CF, now that Finley's gone; Edgardo Alfonzo will be utility. Questions about Garrett Anderson, but say he was much more hurt last year than they let on. On the Angels farm system, Jeff says Eddie Vane does a great job managing there. Jeff says the team's hitting would improve if they moved Erstad off 1st base. Matt Berry is from Rotopass.com. Jeff is with Rotowire.com.

Schwarz--More evidence of HOF vote questions

Alan Schwarz calls them zigzaggers; one voter who's cast 15 votes says his standard differs enormously from that of other voters. Schwarz says as crazy as it is now, it used to be worse. To me, that doesn't make it the slightest bit acceptable. If I'm only being robbed 5 times a year instead of 10 times, I'm supposed to be happy? Whom does this charade benefit, with all its questions & doubts? Definitely not the right people. These votes must be made public, brought out of the back rooms. Obviously, the market this year didn't help the Braves, with Farnsworth moving on. Braves still have good prospects: Chris Reitsma has stuff to close, but inconsistent; Blaine Boyer has most potential, but has had shoulder problems; Macay McBride & Jason LaRue are being considered. Jorge Sosa has an arm for the bullpen, but prefers starting. Mike Hampton is out with surgery. MARCUS GILES will probably bat leadoff, has good OBP, but is a big swinger. Notes Manny's agent now says he's still open to a trade, reversing earlier report. Paul says trade possibilities much better for Tejada, a more positive influence despite recent events. Comments on recent player/team deals: too many years--an actuary would never do these deals. On his HOF comments, I'm left again with more evidence that the procedure has broken down into not much more than a PR vehicle for MLB and every garden variety baseball writer. Re: closers in HOF, one of this year's debates, he says, "You can't just use numbers to value closers." AGREED, Paul. Says Lee Smith has the totals, but was really dominant for a very short time. Says ways to value closers for this award are changing, even in recent years. Paul starts to name recent closers for whom this debate would apply, then says, "Mariano Rivera is......" BUT CHUCK WILSON CUTS HIM OFF, WILL NOT LET HIM SAY A WORD ABOUT MARIANO RIVERA. (3 possible reasons he denied us the expert's timely view: Chuck is very loyal to his friend Dibs, whom he knows wants Mo to get no publicity; 2nd, Chuck is an anxious on-air host, not good at give and take, and just blurted at an inappropriate time; 3rd, Chuck, like many others in the "media" isn't well informed about Mo, couldn't have engaged in any conversation about him, and wanted to change the subject). Re: JOHN FRANCO: They both agree that he's not a HOF'er---total saves doesn't get you the award. Ask question: How much better is a guy than those in his era? Eg., GOSSAGE AND SUTTER MUST BE IN. Ask, what has he done for the game of baseball? Eg. Did he contribute a special split fingered fastball or other pitch? Then, Paul White gives the usual line from people who're uninformed about Mariano Rivera: "A lot of people put emphasis on post season, but that has nothing to do with it---that just tells about the team." Right, Paul! First, most media guys' personal agendas don't permit them to look at post season in the first place. When the HOF rules were established, THE POST SEASON WAS MUCH SHORTER THAN IT IS TODAY. THESE RULES WOULD'VE BEEN CHANGED TO REFLECT CURRENT REALITY IF ENOUGH ETHICAL VOTERS REMAINED, HADN'T RESIGNED IN DISGUST, ETC.

Dibs & Kevin another dead silence about Rivera

Dibs & Kevin take the opportunity to minimize Mariano Rivera by allowing an inaccurate statement to go uncorrected. I've cited examples of their apparent sensitivity to the subject of Rivera before. Part of it may be that Dibs is a close friend of a national league reliever on the west coast, & wants that guy (Hoffman) to get the most recognition. Today's example: A caller looking at the 1931 Yankee team, noting 7 or more of them went to the HOF. The caller says, "YOU CAN'T PUT RELIEVERS IN BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T DONE IT. SO YOU CAN'T EVEN PUT IN MARIANO RIVERA." Comment from either Dibs or Kevin:
  • DEAD SILENCE.
Dibs and Kevin know that Rollie Fingers & Dennis Eckersley are in the HOF. But they allowed the erroneous statement by the caller to go uncorrected.

Phil Rogers, Chicago Tribune, on Damon, Konerko, & HOF voters

Teams should always try to sign free agents before the end of their qualifying year. Not easy, of course. In the case of Damon, the Red Sox didn't do that. But, they've succeeded in having the fan base feeling sorry for them, and being mad at Damon instead of the other way around. Says the White Sox were lucky that the Konerko situation worked out in their favor. Re: Mark Prior: Phil is VERY high on him. Re: HOF---doesn't understand other voters. Phil voted for 7 guys this year. Another voter, unnamed, who works for Phil's paper, only voted for ONE name. Not too many guys will get in at that rate. Rogers liked Andre Dawson, but didn't vote for Jim Rice; said he didn't come through in the post-season.

"MOST POWERFUL PEOPLE IN SPORTS," John Rawlings, Sporting News on XM

John says an individual blogger can be his own media empire. The guys in congress meant a lot this year to baseball vs. how steroids is handled. But, baseball has always been big business, back to Charlie Comiskey, who encouraged gamblers to get involved. Big names to watch in baseball this year: Lou Piniella, Stuart Sternberg, Theo Epstein. Reminds that Baseball is passed on from one person to another. Can't just rely on tv coverage today.

Jeff Erickson's Fantasy Focus with Eric Karabell on XM on Pirates, Brewers

On the Pirates, they should be playing Chris Duffy & Nate McClouth every day. They didn't need Sean Casey; mgmt. doesn't like Craig Wilson. Jeff & Eric like Brad Eldred. The Brewers did the right thing adding Prince Fielder and Ricky Weeks. On the Royals, they're not high on Minky & Grudzielanick. Fantasy expert John Sickels will be on the show tomorrow to answer fan questions.

Mel Antonen, USA Today, on HOF on XM

Mel's HUNCH as to how the numbers of votes will rank this year:
  • Bruce Sutter
  • Bert Blyleven
  • Jim Rice
  • Andre Dawson
Mel's own rankings would be:
  • Bert Blyleven
  • Bruce Sutter
  • Goose Gossage
  • Jack Morris
Doesn't think Morris has all the usual numbers to get in, but had a lot of post season accomplishment that should be considered. Goose Gossage had a number of 2&3 inning saves, a lot of high stakes situations, so should get more credit than just "total saves" as someone like Lee Smith. Says you can't have hundreds of closers on the HOF, you have to set standards. (See Alan Schwarz statement that Eckersley's enrollment hurt chances of present crop of so-called "closers").

Dan Graziano, NJ Star Ledger on Mets & Yanks on XM

Aaron Heilman has great value for Mets--could be starter, reliever, or closer. Problem for Aaron is he's young & has little leverage at this point. Mets job is to convince him that he could make beaucoup bucks if he perfects himself as a reliever or closer, unless they want to let him start, which is his preference. Graziano's views of the Yanks are pretty predictable---murderer's row lineup, and waiting for the great Mariano Rivera to fall apart. Have fun waiting, Dan. There's a long line.

AROD SPEAKS: I won't be in NYC til Jan. 29--NY Post

Arod told the NY Post yesterday from Miami that he'd agreed to meet with MLB and the Players Assn., but that nothing had changed about his decision. This is contrary to published reports Wednesday saying that he'd decided to play. Also, Gene Orza had claimed he'd speak to Arod within 24 hours a few days ago, but Arod said he hasn't spoken to him. In other Yankee business, in what the Post believes is a first, Joe Torre summoned all his coaches to a meeting at Yankee Stadium yesterday. It's thought this was because of the number of coaches new to the team.

BORAS: AROD WILL DISCUSS WBC IN NEXT WEEK OR SO

Following up on their article yesterday, The New York Times reports today that in response to appeals from MLB and the Players Assn., Alex Rodriguez will re-consider his decision not to play for the WBC. Arod's agent, Scott Boras, said the issue will be addressed in the next week or so. Rob Dibble mentioned on XM Wednesday that per Gene Orza, it's solely up to each player to decide whether or not they play in the WBC. However, Orza is incorrect about this, as teams have a number of issues they must address about the many consequences of players' involvement. These include but aren't limited to insurance contracts, physical problems, etc. The fans are only likely to know about what is leaked from various executive offices.

Devil Rays still believed to target Mets ace Aaron Heilman

The St. Petersburg Times reports Thursday Rays still covet Mets pitcher Aaron Heilman. It's believed that Mets' acquisition of 2 relief pitchers from the Dodgers may leave a door open for Tampa Bay, who've been aiming at Heilman all along. Rays' executive VP Andrew Friedman wouldn't confirm negotiations, but said he's pursuing deals on multiple fronts.
