2014 Yankee ratings on YES show improvement from 2013-Neil Best

7/17/14, "Yankees ratings on YES rebound from 2013," Neil Best, Newsday

"The 2010s have seen a steady decline in Yankees ratings on YES, bottoming out last season after a 31-percent drop in viewership during the Bombers’ playoff-free campaign.

But thus far in 2014, things are looking up, with an average of 283,000 viewers per game tuning into YES, a rise of 24 percent compared to the All-Star break last season.

Still, that is a far cry from, say, 2007, when games on YES averaged a whopping 454,000 viewers. Even a late playoff run this season like the one the Yankees managed in ’07 will not generate that kind of average, but it certainly would help.

As will the hype leading up to Derek Jeter’s final regular-season games, which could be the only reason to watch Yankees games come late September if they do not start strongly in the second half."

MLB All Star Game on Fox averaged 7.0 of homes and 11.34 million viewers, both highest since 2010-Neil Best

7/16/14, "Derek Jeter's All-Star farewell a ratings winner for Fox," Neil Best, Newsday

"Derek Jeter's farewell All-Star Game averaged 7.0 percent of homes and 11.34 million viewers on Fox, both the highest such figures since 2010.

Fox said it was the first time since 1993 and '94 that ratings for the event have increased in consecutive years -- albeit at far lower levels than two decades ago.

Viewership was at its highest during the 90 minutes before Jeter left the game.

An average of 11.9 percent of homes in the New York area watched, sixth best among the 56 major markets measured."

Best place to eat a Frito pie is at a minor league baseball game-NY Times

Alpine Cowboys Texas team

7/15/14, "The best place to eat a Frito pie is at a minor-league baseball game. It’s a pile of Fritos with chili, cheese, jalapeños. But the chili can’t be made with beans--it’s a Texas thing. Some say it’s disrespectful to the beans and the meat because they’re so good on their own....

What’s the drive like from east to west Texas?

The landscape changes pretty suddenly. Austin is very green: oak trees and, in the spring and early summer, the fields filled with wildflowers. Leading into south Texas, it gets very arid. No more lush green hills. You’re leaving the hill country and entering the high desert, rivers cutting through, creating canyons. In far-west Texas, there are hours where you don’t see anything, no cars. Great rock formations on the side of the road and a huge sky that goes on for miles."

Center for American Progress suggests national tax on mileage

7/11/14, "Center for American Progress wants mileage-based highway fee," The Hill, Keith Lang

"The Center for American Progress is calling for Congress to ditch the federal gas tax in lieu of a system where drivers pay fees for road construction based on how many miles they travel.

The proposed mileage-based system has been controversial in previous transportation funding debates because critics question how government would monitor the traveling habits of drivers without infringing upon their privacy.

But the Center for American Progress said Friday that taxing drivers based on how far they drive is a much more sustainable system than the current 18.4 cents per gallon federal gas tax. With people driving more fuel-efficient cars, the gas tax isn't bringing in enough money and Congress is scrambling to reach a deal to prevent a cut-off in federal road repair funds.

The mileage-based taxation system was one of four recommendations made Friday by the Center for American Progress, which was founded by White House adviser John Podesta.

The group’s other ideas included a 15-cent gas tax hike to “stabilize” federal highway funding, which would be used to transition government away from the gas tax, and a $100 million mileage-based fee pilot program in 10-15 states.

The recommendations come as Congress is moving toward approving a temporary stopgap that would infuse about $10 billion into the Department of Transportation’s beleaguered Highway Trust Fund.

The gas tax has been the traditional source for funding for the trust fund since it was created in the 1950s. It hasn't been hiked since 1993.

Budget analysts have predicted a $16 billion shortfall next year between gas tax revenue and what Congress wants to spend on roads. The gas tax typically brings in about $34 billion per year, compared with $50 billion in annual road and transit spending.

The Transportation department has warned that it would have to cut its funding to states by 28 percent if Congress does not act quickly to replenish the Highway Trust Fund.

Center for American Progress Director of Infrastructure Policy Kevin DeGood said it was time for Congress to look for other funding sources besides the gas tax if it hopes to craft a meaningful long-term transportation funding bill.

“For too long, Congress avoided addressing our transportation funding problem,” he said.

“Americans need a long-term solution. Mileage fees offer an equitable and effective way to provide for our transportation needs.”"

WFAN morning and afternoon drive came in #2 in NY market in Men 25-54 in Spring 2014 ratings. 3 to 6:30 pm Francesa tied for #1 in market-Neil Best

7/9/14, "WFAN dominates sports radio ratings," Newsday, Neil Best
"WFAN's morning and afternoon drive time shows both finished second among New York-area stations in the spring ratings quarter, with substantial leads over their sports talk competition at ESPN New York.

In the key demographic of men ages 25-54, Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton averaged 7.4 percent of the audience in the period March 27 through June 28, behind only the music station Z-100 at 8.3.

ESPN's national morning show with Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic finished 11th with a 3.5 share in New York.

Mike Francesa's afternoon program averaged a 6.8 share from 1 to 6:30 p.m., behind only Spanish-language music station WSKQ-FM at 8.2.

During the hours in which Francesa competes head-to-head with ESPN's Michael Kay -- 3 to 6:30 p.m. -- Francesa tied for first place overall in the demographic with WSKQ at 7.0. Kay was 10th at 4.3.

Kay usually trailed Francesa by more than a 2-to-1 ratio during ESPN's years on 1050-AM, but his ratings and ranking have improved since the station switched to a better signal at 98.7-FM in the spring of 2012.

WFAN's ratings include both its AM and FM outlets.

The spring ratings period followed a winter during which the simulcast lineup of local sports talk shows realigned radically, with Carton/Esiason, Francesa and Kay all finding new TV homes.

Kay has averaged 19,000 viewers on YES from 3 to 6:30 p.m. since his simulcast began in February compared with 14,000 for Francesa during that time period last year, the network said."
