'Johnny Damon doesn't like to bunt.' Girardi

Suzyn Waldman found this statement surprising related to a 13 inning game on Saturday.
  • Whoever is running the Yankees, and that could be anybody, is willing to work the pitching staff 13 innings instead of 9
  • rather than ask a lead off hitter to bunt when it's needed.
Worse to me is that Damon himself adamantly insists on harming a pitching staff rather than attempt a bunt. Forget losing the game, his attitude toward the pitchers is almost criminal.
  • Maybe fans don't "like" sitting in the car for a few hours to see something below the level of spring training baseball.
Maybe advertisers should all cancel. How about that? Comments like these are logical from a Yankee forum:

"I also would like an explanation of why the team doesn't respect their manager enough to bunt when he needs them to. Because that is exactly what "they aren't comfortable bunting" means.

There's why the team's failing. Right there. Girardi commands nothing."

"He looks helpless when he says that... as if he has given up on this team.

I thought Girardi could transform this team and their mindset... I was wrong. It's the same Yankees team under Joe Torre for the last few years, can't play small ball and fail on situational hitting. Very disappointing."

"I like Damon--but very disappointed that he could have told Girardi "he can't bunt".

The rest of the rigor mortis gang seem to be helpless when it counts.

Again, I repeat, the NY Yankees are held scoreless the first six innings of a ball game more than any team in baseball. It's become an expected result. What a disgusting tribute to a team perennially nicknamed the "Bronx bombers".

  • Johnny Damon should be benched. Mike Scioscia wouldn't impose this kind of lead-off hitter on his team. (sm)
