More on Wagner from Larry Bowa
Chris Russo on WFAN just said Larry Bowa
told him about Wagner: you can't use him 2 days
in a row, loses 3-4 miles off his fastball; you can't
use him in the 8th inning either. Factors like these
are routinely ignored by people who diminish
Mariano Rivera, including people on this station.
In addition to winning, Rivera does 2 jobs--he's
more than just a closer. Sorry to confuse you
guys with the facts.

Having watched Wagner for the last few years, I can say that is pretty close to accurate. Charlie Manuel got about as much out of him as you can in '05 without him blowing up.
The difference this year was that he developed a better slider, so even if he was a bit tired and lost 3-4 mph, he had another pitch to go to or set up the fastball better.
