Do MLB teams know 'carbon offset' purchases can turn out almost as bad as a Bernie Madoff investment?

An offset traded today returns about 80% less than it did 6 or 8 months ago per the Telegraph. That's slightly better odds than Bernie Madoff gave you. Why are MLB teams instructed to involve themselves with this scam 'greenwash' (which gained foothold in the now practically bankrupt UK)? ultimately paid for by all of us through our electricity bills. Seattle Mariners buy carbon offsets:
