Yankees were 10th in Runs Scored in 1996, 6th in 2000 (AL)

Currently the Yankees are 12th in the AL in runs scored (or tied for 11th). This may bode ill, but 'runs scored' and the 'Bronx Bombers' tag weren't the reason they won in 1996, 1999, 2000, and 2001: Behind Seattle, Cleveland, Texas, and Oakland. The Mariners outscored the Yankees in 2001 by 123 runs. The way they won in 1996 didn't sit well with George Steinbrenner. As Joel Sherman wrote in his book, "Birth of a Dynasty," the story of the 1996 team published in 2006:
  • "WE ARE NOT WINNING IN YANKEE STYLE. THESE ARE NOT THE BRONX BOMBERS."
page 149 of Mr. Sherman's book.
  • In the next 4 years the Yankees were #1 or #2 in Runs in the AL, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007. Although they made the playoffs each year and were known for offense, it wasn't enough.
