Bob Nightengale--please speak up

Bob Nightengale was on XM with Charley Steiner today right after the ROY announcements. He might have said something good but he was unintelligible. He mumbled in almost inaudible volume. At this late date, apparently no one coaches XM's guests on a few simple tools needed to be on the radio. The interviewee of course must be willing-- eg. the 'withholding' manner of speech is heard on talk shows of all kinds. It says several things, all stemming from a flawed character. Charley Steiner, the host, continues to be great in his role on the show.
  • For the record, I heard a different guest on Charley's show today say something incredible, but it's the mantra you hear 24/7 about the Yankees. In spite of what the Yankee's have been trying to do with the team for the past couple of years and in the face of their 40% luxury surtax, the guest stated flatly they'd be going after any high priced free agents out there except almost none are available. But they'd be doing it. He didn't cite a source for that certainty. Nor did Charley ask him for one. Charley is excellent on the show because he can talk, but he's made it clear he avoids controversy. The idea that it's the interviewee's "take" or "opinion" isn't a defense. If that's the case, listeners should be reminded with a daily disclaimer that views expressed are those of the speaker, etc. Fine if it's not fact, just give us a disclaimer.

  • Feel free to mention me by name when you criticize me. I was asked my opinion and I gave it. Brian Cashman has said he would go after Mike Lowell if he was not going to go back to Boston. Doesn't that qualify? They're not afraid to spend money -- there's just nobody on the free agent market to spend it on this winter.

  • Thanks for your comment. My post involved several issues. The problem of opinion being perceived as fact is enormous. It's been addressed recently by the ESPN ombudsman.
