Brian Bruney had big role in longest 9 inning game

NY Times' Tyler Kepner notes how Bruney helped Joe Torre in 2006:

  • "LEANING ON BRUNEY- Brian Bruney quickly became a favorite of Joe Torre’s last season (2006), pitching 15 games after Aug. 31 and working in three of four playoff games against Detroit."...
I listen to John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman, and was reminded in the past couple of days (I believe Monday night) by John Sterling about a 2006 Bruney performance:
  • BRUNEY PITCHED 1.2 INNINGS IN THE AUGUST 18, 2006 YANKEES @ RED SOX IN FENWAY PARK. THE GAME BECAME AN HISTORIC MLB LANDMARK, THE LONGEST 9 INNING GAME PLAYED IN MLB HISTORY (4 hours, 45 minutes). WHEN BRUNEY ENTERED THE GAME, THE YANKEES WERE LOSING 8-7, AND THERE WAS A MAN ON BASE. He got out of a mess. THAT GAME WAS EVENTUALLY WON BY THE YANKEES AND WAS THE FIRST IN THE MODERN DAY 5 GAME BOSTON MASSACRE.
STERLING MENTIONED THAT THIS PERFORMANCE IN BOSTON IS WHAT TORRE VALUED MOST (It was 1.2 IP).
