Furman Bisher, Atlanta Journal on Bruce Sutter & HOF questions
Furman says Sutter popularized split finger fastball, but shouldn't get credit for inventing
it. (Sutter does say Fred Martin, a Cubs minor league coach, taught it to him). Furman says Elroy
actually invented that pitch in 1959, & it was termed a "forkball." (Not to be confused with
the "porkball," often connected to White Sox champ Jose Contreras). Furman Bisher's vote for
this year's HOF is as follows: DALE MURPHY, BERT BLYLEVEN, JIM RICE, ANDRE DAWSON.
Update: Kevin Kennedy later says a "forkball" & a split finger fastball are 2 different
things.
