Mattingly, Bowa, Honeycutt, M. Duncan on tap for Dodgers--LA Times

"The Dodgers have decided that they want Don Mattingly, Larry Bowa, Rick Honeycutt and Mariano Duncan to be part of their coaching staff, sources close to newly hired Manager Joe Torre said today.
  • The roles of the four coaches remain uncertain. Either Mattingly or Bowa, both of whom were on Torre's staff with the New York Yankees last season, will be the bench coach. Mattingly could also be the hitting coach, and Bowa could be the third base coach.
Honeycutt and Duncan, who were with the Dodgers last season, will be back in their respective roles as pitching and first-base coach.
  • The four coaches won't sign contracts until at least Monday.
Dodgers officials did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment." (I remember Mariano Duncan from the 1996 Yankee team). sm

  • I don't understand why Torre would take less pay to play here, but I'm glad he's coming. The Dodgers need some help. I'm hopeful the Girardi can add some new energy to NY too. I guess we'll see...

  • Thanks for your comment. Torre had been here 12 years and it was just the end of the line for the characters involved. The only reason he was in a room with them in the end was because he called them--they didn't call him. He didn't deserve for this to be his last year, nor did he deserve the way he was treated in the end. But, it was going to end eventually and if you're in a place 12 years, all kinds of politicians have been practicing their shots. You can't always tell by facial expressions, etc. but this team got something together by coming back from 21-29 to start the season. From a Dodgers point of view he'll probably help--he has a big time reputation, knows lots of people that may buy tickets to games, etc., maybe new fans will come of it, older fans may feel more confident there's commitment in the dugout.
