Lupica: Joba as bridge to Rivera & too bad Minaya didn't make a similar big move for the Mets...

"The Yankees are not this close to the Red Sox and this close to officially securing a playoff spot without Joba becoming the first reliable bridge to Mo Rivera since Jeff Nelson and Mike Stanton.
  • And because the Joba Rules were in place for these six weeks, at least the kid won't be pitched out when the postseason begins next week, pitched out the way Tom Gordon was before him, and Paul Quantrill, and all the others who were supposed to be that kind of bridge to Rivera.

There are a lot of reasons why the Yankees came on this way the last six weeks. None bigger than the big kid from Nebraska. Biggest move of the year. Willie Randolph probably wishes his general manager had made one like it for him."

jp richardi says papelbons the best closer in baseball when even if you want to leave Mo aside what about Joe Nathan who's done it longer and done great in the post season and a few times in Rivera multiple innings style or even K Rod
but my favorite part is many pages into the article the red sox announce they may now be willing to let Paplebon work 3 days in row and multiple innings like Mariano contradicting the whole Paplebon is the best closer in baseball and thee post season weapon article. Paplebons' never pitched a full season and hes blowing big games here in September. Theirs also a point about what a great guy paplebon is by taking less money to be the closer. If a top closer hit the free agent market in the 90's like Mark Davis they got the same contract years and dollars that the top starters got. Marino always took way below market money and that cost closers money all over baseball. I mean BJ ryan after one great year got 15 million a year

  • Thanks very much for that, James. I no longer read SI due to past treatment there of Rivera by Tom Verducci. (I have an example on another blog I have BaseballMediaWatch.blogspot.com, which I mostly use for files. JP Riccardi probably got in trouble a year or so ago when he publicly said Mo has made the difference in the Yankees' years of success--that's a no-no. I noted it on this blog, which I'll find and post again. BJ Ryan also said Mo was the best. The YES Network shows its colors by providing a showcase for perfumed, phony celebrities like Verducci. I don't know if Verducci wrote the article you reference, but it applies nevertheless. And Mo is and has been underpaid, always begging the Yankees to re-sign him instead of going on the open market. I wonder if JP made the statement before or after Papelbon gave up the grand slam?
