Sheffield traded to Detroit Tigers for 3 minor-leaguers
"Like Andrew Miller only right-handed" is how Rob Dibble described the best of the 3 minor league pitchers the Yankees acquired from the Tigers in return for Gary Sheffield. Chris Russo points out the Yankees did Sheffield a favor by letting him go to a contending American League
team.
- Why would a team's players feel terribly comfortable sitting around shooting the breeze with a player who betrays them? The first year Sheffield was on the NY team, he gave a long, windy interview to NY Magazine which displayed an unreliable character. No one complains Sheffield wasn't a worker, didn't step up, etc., but to characterize him as a "stand-up guy" and a "team leader" is misleading. If he owned the team, fine, but he was only a member of a team. Dibble's great on the radio, but his point of view reflects a lack of knowledge about the New York market. Dibble on other days has mentioned a bigger problem, which is the stifling presence of media in the Yankee clubhouse, noting players only loosen up when they're on the road, away from quite so many leaches.
