Few See Real Reason Hoffman Again an All Star--San Diego Union Trib

How to read this article: This is part of a spam campaign to try & make you forget that TREVOR NEVER COMES IN WITH MEN ON BASE & HASN'T PITCHED MORE THAN 1 INNING IN ALMOST 2 YEARS. HE HAS NO DEFENSE AGAINST THE SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE OF MARIANO RIVERA WHOSE JOB WOULD TAKE 3 TREVORS TO DO. TREVOR, WHY NOT BE HONEST LIKE THE REST & JUST SAY 'I'M NO MO.'

"Hoffman has...pitched so few innings, that the suspicion lurks that Bochy might get more mileage out of him.

  • Sullivan/Hoffman/Dibs/Theo prime spammers et al. are frantic--they know Mariano Rivera has come in with men on base for 11 regular seasons and 11 post seasons, but Trevor hasn't & won't. Other teams who want to win championships are starting to use their closers for more than 1 inning, making Trevor look even weaker. Their main point in life continues to be to minimize Mariano Rivera. (They'll dismiss this, but Mariano even pitched 3 consecutive innings earlier this season, in addition to other multi-inning appearances). Here, they're trying to blur the issue, saying he PROBABLY COULD PITCH MORE, BUT THAT DOESN'T REALLY COUNT OR MATTER ANYWAY. REALLY? He has many fewer Games Finished than similar pitchers. That means you need more bodies to finish the game!

Take yesterday. Clinging to a 2-1 lead with two outs in the seventh inning, Padres starter Chris Young loaded the bases and was replaced by Brian Sweeney. Sweeney promptly yielded a two-run single to Omar Vizquel and a three-run homer to Pedro Feliz, effectively making Hoffman moot.

  • Of course they're just trying to save him for the cookie stats.

Some baseball theorists believe the best relief pitchers should be used in such late-inning jams instead of awaiting a ninth-inning call that might never come. Hoffman and Bochy prefer more rigidly defined roles.

  • Translation of "More rigidly defined roles"= Easier outings, no men on base, fewer pitches in a pitchers' park with no DH.
"“I think you get tempted by that philosophy at times,"” Hoffman said of the idea of putting out fires earlier in a ballgame. "“(But) I think we've been fortunate for most of my tenure here that we've had a strong bullpen. I think some of that strength comes from the ability for (Bochy) to find roles from the sixth inning through to the ninth, when I get to come in."
  • "Tempted by a philosophy?" How about reality? You're not the best Trevor, and you're amazingly unable to accept that. You have lots of powerful media friends, & you're desperate to raise your image.

Most of it comes from having Hoffman." from Tim Sullivan's article July 3, 2006 (He's also from.....San Diego). (Adoration time).

  • I like the line about how Trevor's use may be debated by baseball 'theorists' like it's something debatable or esoteric. Mr. Sullivan, the guy is on record as measuring even every warm-up pitch he throws, desperately trying to save his arm so he can get an award. No one else wanted this guy except maybe Cleveland, & they didn't want to pay him & he didn't want to move there. This is a publicity scheme. You obviously know the guy & are 1 of many in the media who are swamping us 24/7 with propaganda about this guy who's just not satisfied to be what he is--a 1 inning small town pitcher. There's nothing wrong with that except that he's NOWHERE NEAR MARIANO RIVERA IN REGULAR OR POST SEASON AND SHOULDN'T BE MENTIONED IN THE SAME SENTENCE. WE ALL HAVE COMPUTERS & CAN LOOK IT UP.
