"Wang will be Yankees #1 pitcher eventually"----Posada

Jorge relates his high opinion of Chien-Ming Wang to a reporter, saying he has the best stuff on the club. I'd rather have a ground ball pitcher, quiet & poised anyday myself than a big, loud, power guy. Not to say Wang's arm or shoulder is injury free, but what a joy it was to see him last year, ground ball after ground ball, fielding them himself. I know that's not the stats guys' cup of tea, but still.

  • I see you haven't updated yet today, but I love Charley Steiner raving about how Sosa's career is like a bell curve, while he apparently has failed to notice that every player not named Barry Bonds' career has unfolded nearly identically to Sosa's.

  • Brett, I heard that, too--I was driving back from the ballpark in Tampa (I'll be back in NY in a few
days, & will have more time to post)--
I thought the same thing about the
    bell curve description---although I
don't like clubhouse problem types, it
could be said about the careers of
    many.

  • I hadn't realized how steep Wang's G/F ratio was - that changes my outlook on him quite a bit, especially now that the mere spectre of Tony Womack playing second base behind him is long gone. I'm one of those guys that uses strikeout rates and K/BB ratios as a leading indicator, but groundball rates are important too. I'd still like to see the K/BB ratio improve, but I might have to improve his projection just a little bit.

I know I might be treading a little on sacred cows here, but I'd also feel more confident in Wang if it were A-Rod rather than Jeter at short - I think A-Rod has significantly more range, enough that it overcomes Jeter's admittedly excellent instincts and arm.

  • Thanks for your comments, Jeff. I
heard your show today, saying to think
    twice about accepting spring training
reportage, & that you're more interested in injuries. And, of course, with Wang you have to think of
his arm problems. He shut down for quite awhile last year, & it was said
he might need surgery. He opted against that. I believe he pitched in
1 of the alds games against the Angels
& just left you breathless with all the self-fielded ground balls. I'd
like to ask you more about your
    comment about the Yankee shortstop,
but I'll save that for another time.
    Thanks again.

  • If someone cares enough to blog about my show, the least I can do is check it out. I always appreciate the feedback.
