Jeter 5th inning relay not 'the flip' but a Tiger said was the play of the night

10/2/11, "It was not quite "The Flip," but Saturday night Derek Jeter made another improvised play that loomed large in a Yankee playoff game.

Jeter's decision to step in and make the relay throw on a fifth-inning, run-saving play at the plate helped spur the Yankees to a 9-3 win and a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five ALDS.

Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera had no doubt that it was the play of the night, just like Jeter's "flip" toss to the plate

"That was the difference in the game," Cabrera said. "If we score a run, we could go on a run right there."

Instead, Ivan Nova, who had walked Tigers catcher Alex Avila and given up a single to Ryan Raburn, was able to get out of the fifth inning unscathed and with the game still deadlocked at 1-1."... Above, ALDS game 3, 10/16/01, bottom of the 7th in Oakland, 1-0 Yankees, Jeremy Giambi would have tied the game. Yankees had already lost the first two games, so the season would have been over if the A's had won this game. Final score, 1-0, Mike Mussina 7 innings, Rivera 2 innings. The only run was Posada's home run in the 5th.
