David Cone felt YES Network executive instrusive and disrespectful--Joel Sherman

"I hear that since David Cone left the YES Network that ESPN has made a run at trying to recruit him without success. Sources tell me Cone also has been approached by the Players Association to join on in at least an advisory role and that Cone is leaning toward accepting such an offer....

He had a personality conflict with one executive in particular, feeling this executive was intrusive and disrespectful all year.

  • However, there were two incidents, in particular, that made Cone flip out.

Early in the season, with the Yankees struggling, Cone remarked on the air that if the Yankees did not start performing better than they could fall out of the race. The YES executive told the broadcasters that this remark aggravated Hank Steinbrenner and needed to be avoided in the future (so much for a firewall between the team and what is said on the air). Cone felt this was a true statement – and rather innocuous – and should not have been discussed.

  • Late in the season, Cone remarked that one of the important, behind-the-scenes workers involved in daily coverage of the Yankees was a free agent at the end of the year.

Cone was confronted by the YES executive and there was a heated exchange during which Cone explained that he had made a lot of money playing (nearly $67 million) and took the YES job as a way to get back into baseball,

  • but that he would not take such verbal abuse from anyone because he did not need the job.

At that point it became apparent that Cone would not be back in 2010. Instead, YES plans on bringing in Tino Martinez to do about 40 games."

  • i'm not surprised..its been my experience with the yes network that they act like dictator's and have condoned racism on their message board for which i refuse to ever return !!

  • I haven't noticed racism by the YES Network, but the fact is they are not the Yankees. Their largest shareholder is Goldman Sachs. Leo Hindery founded the network and put key executives in place, at least some of whom are still there though Hindery has slithered on. Hindery took $250 million in pay from Global Crossing for less than one year's work (the company shortly went bankrupt). I would not trust people hired by a person such as Hindery. As far as Goldman Sachs, it's safe to say their concerns are different than those of fans.

  • I'm sorry you had that experience on the YES Network's website. They again show no connection whatsoever with the Yankee fan. I wrote letters to them a few years ago on some other matters, all of which were ignored. I finally heard back from a lower level guy who only confirmed what I thought in the first place. Filippeli (I've seen several spellings) was one I wrote to whom I believe was a Hindery hire. Randy Levine is somewhat involved but what is he going to do? He's a Bud Selig guy anyway. It was much better for fans when the Yankees were on MSG (before YES).
