• in beginning talks with teams about K-Rod, he conceded publicly

• there was no market for closers this year and then

• was ready to accept the Mets' first offer of three years, $34 million for him.

According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Tellem had to get involved and was able to get Fred and Jeff Wilpon to throw another $3 million of "face-saving money" into the deal."...
