K-rod seeks 'Mariano Money' for many more years...

(Regular season) "Record-breaking Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez is seeking at least $75 million over five years, agent Paul Kinzer said Wednesday. K-Rod wants "at least" five years who called that price the "baseline" to get into the ballgame for the All-Star closer who set the single-season saves record this season.
  • Kinzer made clear, however, that his client was hoping for even more. The agent declined to name a top target price."...
  • Commenter to story on SportingNews.com cites false spin in this custom-designed regular season total save stat hype:

"Alot of guys could go 62 for 69... Teams shouldn't pay him because of that number 62.. When you break it down it's good but give alot of closers 69 chances and they will close out at least 60"..
  • (The full weight of MLB is behind the hype of K-rod in this case. If it weren't, you wouldn't see the torrent of sycophants, toadies and lackeys falling in line). sm
P.S. To K-rod's agent, if and when your client proves he can pitch consistently over a number of years with the biggest money on the line (ie the post season), then he could be in line for Mariano Money. That's what Mariano Money means--big money games, multi-inning appearances, runners on base, tie games, 3 consecutive scoreless innings Game 7 ALCS in 2003, not to mention deadlocked and come from behind pennant races--not custom designed 'regular season total save stats.'
