Bud Selig editorial in Sun-Sentinel, "New Stadiums a Boon for Cities" 8/3/08

(Selig, Sun-Sentinel): "As Commissioner of Major League Baseball, I have witnessed an unprecedented renaissance of the national pastime. By any objective measure, the popularity of Major League Baseball is at an all time high. An essential element of this renaissance has been the development of 21 new ballparks since 1991, which have revitalized their surrounding neighborhoods and communities. A common characteristic of every deal was the forging of a public — private partnership.
  • Arlington, Tex., Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, St. Louis and Washington D.C. succeeded in developing new ballparks and are continuously realizing benefits.
The tangible benefits are clear, including: jobs, increased sales tax revenues, ancillary construction and development, and increased property taxes. Intangible benefits include civic pride, family entertainment value, minority business participation, media exposure and community benefits."....
