Florida Marlins $22m payroll, $25m revenue sharing

Revenue sharing will achieve its intended result if conducted in the way John Brattain of the Hardball Times suggests:

• "Ideally, revenue-sharing money goes into a fund jointly administered by the commissioner’s office and the MLBPA, with any disputes subject to binding arbitration. A team receiving money in this manner cannot touch the fund unilaterally—the team can have a set limit it can submit invoices for each year
• that can be banked in the event the team builds towards a playoff run and blows the wad then. In the meantime,
• a club invoices the fund when it signs/extends a player/drafts so it has access to the money."

Mr. Brattain notes the Florida Marlins are slated to get $25 million this year in revenue sharing (bringing their grand total to $200 million).

• That means the Marlins payroll is actually free to Loria since it's only $22 million. And the Lorias still have $3 million leftover. And this doesn't get into luxury tax, etc.

• (I mentioned on an earlier post, a company I know of had the same Yankee box seats for over 50 years. The recent price was $175,000. The same seats next year would be $850,000. The company is not renewing. The Marlins will be getting their revenue from someone else).

Then came the "MLB FOG," which is a media blanket telling you what they want you to think. Less than 3 weeks after Mr. Brattain's piece in the Hardball Times, a deluge of articles obediently explained how clever the Marlins are with such a low payroll. Shockingly they started with Alex Rodriguez' salary, then went on to describe a bunch of other salaries that made the Marlins look quite saintly. And drummed up overall rage and envy. (I've seen and heard it, so it's not a myth).
