John Sterling shows restraint, 5/1/08

Bottom of the first, Tigers at Yankees, ball connects off Shelley Duncan's bat, looks like it will be an easy out but the throw isn't good from 3B Carlos Guillen to Miguel Cabrera at first base. Sterling was about to say Duncan was safe, but he paused for a second. I heard the crowd cheering. Only then did Sterling say Duncan was safe at first. (Not to say he was waiting for the crowd to cheer, but just that he waited). It ended up being an error on Guillen.
  • I mention it because some criticize Sterling for anticipating which in my experience is not warranted. Having XM, one can listen to all kinds of play by play guys. There are those who do their share of anticipating, but that isn't the most egregious offense of today's play-by-play guys.
