Why was Joba allowed to throw so many pitches today?--Russo, WFAN

All agree the Yankees are under no obligation to tell anyone what their intentions are with Joba. But Mike & Chris point out the team should have its own mind made up and have the kid prepare accordingly.
  • Russo makes another point which makes sense re: Farnsworth. First, Farnsworth cannot be counted on period, we've all heard how Girardi thinks he can make something of Farnsworth, used to be on the Cubs, etc.
Russo makes an additional point I hadn't heard: WHEN CASHMAN ORIGINALLY LOOKED TO SIGN FARNSWORTH, HE CALLED GIRARDI IN CHICAGO FOR HIS ADVICE. GIRARDI APPARENTLY PUT IN A GOOD WORD FOR FARNSWORTH.
  • RESULT: NOW BOTH CASHMAN AND GIRARDI ARE TRYING TO SALVAGE THEIR REPUTATIONS ON THE SIGNING OF FARNSWORTH BY FORGING AHEAD WITH THE DISASTROUS IDEA THAT FARNSWORTH CAN BE THE 8TH INNING GUY.THERE IS AMPLE EVIDENCE FARNSWORTH CANNOT POSSIBLY DO THE JOB, FOR A VARIETY OF REASONS. HE NEVER HAS--ANYWHERE.
THIS APPROACH--ie, JOBA starting and Farnsworth in the 8th--will guarantee failure for everyone involved. Not saying Joba would be a failure as a starter, but they could screw him up by putting him in 2 roles as they're presently doing.
