Ex Yankee strength coach "a little too Richard Simmons..." NY Times

Selena Roberts' article addresses judgment failures among sports owners and managers, including blood soaked materials at Michael Vick's mansion, NY Jets' phony team doctor, etc., but the description of Brian Cashman's nutty strength guru was at least funny:

  • "Of all the strength and fitness trainers Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman could have hired to oversee the delicate Fabergé eggs on his payroll, he picked Marty Miller, whose résumé seemed a little too Richard Simmons. His background included a stint as fitness guru for the “Sweating to the Oldies” members at a country club in South Florida.

Hamstrings aren’t made of Silly Putty, as it turns out. Miller was fired last week after the Yankees’ pitching rotation began limping in unison as if possessed by Deputy Chester from “Gunsmoke.”

  • The employment of Miller in a crucial role cast Cashman’s judgment into question. And judgment is the issue. What people are chosen to surround a franchise? Who is the posse of the owner, the coach or the general manager? Does word of mouth and nepotism qualify a résumé?"
(Next we'll hear Cashman was trying to work a deal for Julio Mateo who unfortunately beat his wife up yesterday). sm Ms. Roberts' article is Times Select, which costs $7 or $8 a month to get.
