Richard Griffin, Toronto Star, on BJ Ryan, Ted Lilly, & the Red Sox

On Baseball Beat today, had comments on 3 topics: BJ Ryan/Roy Halladay, Ted Lilly, and the Red Sox.
  • Says Ryan did a great job, but "was overused at the beginning of the season, and it cost him later." Ryan did give them a lot of work, a lot of 1.2 and 2.0 innings (NOTICE TO ALL BBWAA PROPAGANDISTS--THE 1-INNING CLOSER IS NON-EXISTENT IN THE AL EAST---HAVE A NICE DAY). Griffin made some reference to the Toronto manager's communication skills, but I don't know if he was blaming the "overuse" on that. He did say Roy Halladay would've won another Cy Young award this year, but he lost some games later in the season because of a tired BJ Ryan. (I've checked all the game logs for the year, checked out Ryan's workload, and compared Halladay's late season results against Ryan's own appearances and results. I don't see a causal connection there. Halladay had 2 ND's in July, both of which the Jays ended up winning. On July 30, he had another ND after 6.2 IP, but he didn't get the L, Ryan did. There was no connection of note between the two in August; in September there was 1 but it only helped Halladay, even though he didn't get the W. Halladay pitched 9 innings, after which the score was tied 3-3, the Jays ended up winning, Ryan got the W). So, just after this look at things, I don't see how Ryan ruined Halladay's chance for an award.
  • On Ted Lilly- "he overachieved this year in his free agent year. He's spent a career frustrating his" coaches/managers. Griffin thinks Lilly will ask for too much $$ from the Jays to consider having him back anyway.
  • On the Red Sox, something strange: "Latins and Dominicans don't feel comfortable landing at the Red Sox these days," and referenced past (what I thought were long-past) controversies about minorities on the Red Sox teams.
On Griffin's overall view about the Blue Jays: "I'm not concerned with being optimistic." My biggest concern with the Blue Jays is their farm system.
