IT WAS SHEFFIELD--THE BOSS SAID IT FIRST

"The first shot was fired by Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who said he believed Sheffield hurt the Yankees' chemistry when he returned from a four-month DL stint after suffering a serious wrist injury."
  • This report is from Jim Baumbach in Newsday, 10/9/06. Baumbach then says Sheffield's widely quoted complaints were to come out in USA Today. So, possibly Sheffield heard he had been blamed and came up with an excuse.
  • I posted the night of the loss that "It was Gary Sheffield" that broke up the team.
Again from Newsday, "The Yankees hold a $13-million option for Gary Sheffield next season, but it's impossible to envision him back in pinstripes again after the salvo thrown at him -- and then by him -- yesterday." If you want to get specific, much of the post mortem talk about lack of spirit should focus on this duplicitous cancer in the clubhouse.
