John Sickels with Jeff Erickson on XM
John talks of his upcoming trip to the midwest for a close look at great Angels' prospect Brandon Wood & others...checking out his progress at handling breaking balls,
etc. Thinks Tigers' pitcher Justin Verlander is best young pitcher in the league; is
high on Snell, while others have slight reservations about him. John says BJ Upton is
more than ready offensively, wonders why the D-Rays don't bring him up to the show. Jeff shares it might be a question of number of options team still has on him--the Rays
want to bring him up for good next time. Jeff uses the word "fungible," which I looked
up--it means something than can be used interchangeably. I always like new words.

To clarify with Upton (and Delmon Young for that matter), because I might not have adequately described it on air:
Service time is the issue here. A player's arbitration clock usually starts after three years of major league service time, but there is a class of "super-two" players that also become arbitration-eligible. These player usually have 2 years of service + 86 days, and ranks in the top 17% of his class in service time.

The idea here is that the Rays don't want to start that service time clock now, unless they are absolutely sure they want to play Upton everyday, so that they can avoid arbitration with him after the 2008 season.

Thanks for the clarification, Jeff. I
guess they have all those rules for a
reason.
