Convenience store owner fights off robber with baseball bat

Plainfield -- Police say a thief tried to take the money and run from a food mart in Plainfield. Instead he left the scene in an ambulance. Just after 11 last night, a man police now identify as 44-year-old David Rainville of Canterbury, walked into the Plainfield Food Mart Norwich Road and tried to grab the cash register. However, the owners uncle wasn't going to let him have that and he grabbed a bat and beat the would be robber. "The guy had a knife he said 'don't move' and his face was covered," says store owner Zulfigar Ali. Security cameras caught all the action, but the tape is now police evidence as well as the bat which the uncle used on the would be robber. "He hit the arm, back of head, and shoulder," says Ali, "then a friend, he held the door and kept him inside the store till cops get there." That friend was Najir, who had his store robbed just three weeks ago. "My mother tried to give him money," says Najir, "he said 'no I want the whole register' and my mother took a plate threw it at him." Plainfield police charged suspect David Rainville with attempted robbery and he was held on $100,000 bond. No one else in the store was injured. From WFSB TV, Hartford, CT.
