Alan Schwarz, NY Times, on HOF Relievers

On the Beat today, Alan Schwarz gives nuggets:
  1. "Dennis Eckersley's election to the HOF has really hurt the candidacy of the present group." (Referring to relievers & so-called closers).
  2. Many voters don't do their homework.
  3. Many voters write off some so-called closers as just 1 inning pitchers, when that isn't the case.
  4. Question should be asked, who'd you want in a clutch situation?
  5. A lot a votes are decided on the candidate's relationship with the press.
  6. On the question of Lee Smith, Mr. Schwarz says no, at least not until the Gossage & Sutter issues are decided.
Alan does not have a vote. NY Times employees aren't allowed to vote for baseball awards.
