Mel Antonen on Blue Jays, Orioles, Angels, Mariners
Mel Antonen of USA Today reports some teams like
the Blue Jays and Orioles reduced payroll in the past
few years in order to go ahead in the upcoming year.
Explains the Jays' big signings so far, and the Orioles
offering Konerko $65 million. Mel says the Blue Jays
had 21 blown saves in 2005, 7 of which were in the 9th
inning, 2nd lowest in saves in AL ahead of the Royals.
Feels the Orioles have a perception problem, management
problems, which is a reason someone like Konerko turned
down their offer. (Even though it's a great hitters' park).
It's harder for them to get pitchers there, & they just lost
their closer. On the Angels' side, spring training in
Arizona is another plus for Konerko. BUT, if Konerko
goes to the Angels, where would Manny go? Mel cites
the Seattle Mariners, but only if the Sox paid a lot.
Manny & Mike Hargrove are friends from their Cleveland
Indians days.
