Pitcher's increased velocity alone mistakenly viewed as positive effect of steroids, eg. Dan Naulty

Dan Naulty's 2nd selling point--pounced on by the 'watchdog' media-- was his increased velocity made him better (and in his imagination cost others their jobs-also not necessarily so but promoted by the media).*** A statistics minded mlblogger looked into it further and found his performance unchanged by his increased velocity, 2/29/08: his minor ERA, WHIP & K/BB ratio took a beating late in the season when he moved up a level (shouldn't it have stayed the same),
  • his K/9IP went down. Throughout his Major League career, as he used, gained weight & velocity,
His minor league career was normal,
  • his major league career got worse as it went on;
please don't tell me that if he didn't use he wouldn't have gotten as far, you cannot prove that." After all, if Naulty had said steroids did not help him (which on closer examination appears to be the case), Mitchell/Selig and their compliant media wouldn't have made him famous. (sm) P.S. Using a steroid story to make money: At the outset, Naulty said he sought a book deal. I never heard this fact mentioned other than 1 sentence at the bottom of a newspaper article. If there were an independent press, someone might have asked him, Including the fact that you weren't on the 1999 post season roster although you deliberately leave the impression that you were?"
