Pettitte-Torre talk initiated to drive up Yankee price--LA Times
LAS VEGAS --12/10, "All that talk about Andy Pettitte becoming a Dodger was apparently just that -- talk.
- Randy Hendricks, the agent for the free-agent left-hander, helped to initiate moves that led to a phone call between Pettitte and Dodgers Manager Joe Torre earlier this fall.
- That wasn't an effort to find work for his client in L.A. --
- but rather to drive the price up in New York.
Pettitte, 36, made $16 million during each of the last two seasons, and wants that much again next year. But the Yankees' best offer is $10 million. And if New York doesn't deliver, Pettitte, who won 14 games last year, is said to be leaning toward retirement rather than pitching for another team -- Torre's Dodgers included.
- Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said Tuesday that he hasn't spoken to the pitcher in about 10 days."
