NY Times tells a lie about Andy Pettitte today

From the NY Times article by Michael S. Schmidt, 1/12/08, "For McNamee and Clemens, a New Dispute."

• "Andy Pettitte, who has already admitted taking several injections of H.G.H., as McNamee asserted in the report on baseball and performance-enhancing drugs that former Senator George Mitchell released Dec. 13."

This is a lie. Pettitte has not admitted to several injections of HGH (which was not illegal and does not enhance performance). He admitted to exactly 2. There's a difference between 2 and several but if you're the NY Times, you can say whatever you want. The NY Times is part owner of the Boston Red Sox of which George Mitchell is a director. As Rob Dibble noted today, most media will not question any circumstances around the so-called Mitchell Report. They are afraid to do so.

• UPDATE 2:50AM: The NY Times has made a correction from their earlier edition. Their story about Andy now says "he admitted to injections," Glad they made the correction. sm
