Somehow it will end up being the Yankees' fault

"But, you say, Fox didn’t carry a single Rockies game this season.

  • And neither did ESPN or ESPN2 on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays or holidays.

O.K., it’s their fault, too, for lacking baseball clairvoyance. Fox deemed the Rockies so unworthy of its air this season that it dumped Colorado games on June 30, July 21 and Aug. 4 in order to carry presumably more attractive matchups.***

  • Now Fox is challenged to carry a World Series starring the Rockies against the Indians (10 total appearances on Fox, ESPN and ESPN2) or the Red Sox (a total of 24) one season after it broadcast the least-viewed fall classic on record."
From NY Times article by Richard Sandomir, "Viewer Up! Not When it Comes to the NLCS," 10/17/07
  • This system will eventually cave in. Laws of nature apply. (sm)
***P.S. The Rockies swept the Yankees in June. At the time everyone said the Yankees were therefore bad. Probably not too many said the Rockies were therefore good. FOX AND ESPN HAD THEIR CHANCE TO PAY ATTENTION HERE.

  • NYY haters always make it the Yankees fault. I keep saying: try a season w/o NYY revenue from tix, sharing & products. The rest of MLB would beg them to come back.

Part of the problem with baseball being considered boring, is TV commercials. Fox & ESPN have added CGI, some of which is fine, and it all looks like a commercial for a video game, 99% of which can't be matched by what happens on the field.

That, and the fact Boston is a bunch of hypocrites.

  • I heard Paul White from USA Today say yesterday baseball ratings are driven by the casual fan, that it's assumed regular fans will be there anyway. The tv guys are starting with the assumption the product is boring, and it goes downhill from there.
