"THE MEDIA WILL PUSH FOR CHAMBERLAIN to be placed into the closer's role if Mariano Rivera leaves."

  • "The media will push for Chamberlain to be placed into the closer's role if Mariano Rivera leaves.
Still, the rotation is where he can most help the team, regardless of whether Rivera returns." (P.S. "The Media will push", etc. Sorry for all the proof and evidence about "the media.") "The media?" Who exactly is that?
  • ***With word ownership/head honchos are all agreed Joba will start, it leaves them with no bullpen to speak of. They're assuming --with this declaration about Chamberlain--that they'll have Mariano Rivera back. They've taken him for granted for 13 years, and I hope he sticks it to them and leaves.***

  • Ms. Mullen,

It is clear that you worship Rivera, and if you're going to worship a player, he's as good as any. But tell me how making him the highest paid closer in the game for the past seven years, always locking him up before he got to free agency (until he was 37), and paying him $75 million over the course of his career is the Yankees taking him for granted? You couldn't be more off on this one.

  • You're correct, he has been well paid. I refer to behavior such as last February's. His agent had asked for a simple phone call prior to spring training, in which the team could simply have said, we'd like to wait until after the season to discuss future contracts. They didn't have to offer him a contract, just a phone call, which they did not do. Maybe he has a weak agent, I don't know. The result was Mariano going in front of the media asking for a contract which was a disgrace. Instead of calling him to discuss it, Cashman went in front of cameras to answer him saying we'll wait til after the season. With all the alleged Yankee resources, with all the players they've wasted money on, you'd think they'd at least have the courtesy to call this guy on the phone rather than responding to him in the mass media. That's one example. For what it's worth, it was very much discussed among fans at that time. As far as his pay, relievers are getting quite a bit of money these days if you can even find any. In contrast to other players, Mariano has always said he wants to be a Yankee for life. Anyone who does something like that takes a chance of being taken a bit for granted-that's just common sense. As I've said elsewhere, there are others who've noticed Mo is underrated including Lupica, Joel Sherman, Ian O'Connor, Curt Schilling, and others. What I say doesn't make any difference to anyone really.
