Goose victimized by length of career--Neyer

On Friday, 1/5/07, Rob Neyer made this comment about Gossage on XM. I don't mention this as a "debating" point in the HOF issue. There is no debate--it's a publicity and star vehicle for the voters, to whom no one would otherwise pay attention. I just thought Neyer's comments were interesting. He said it's really a simple decision--the nominee must have added 4-5 wins per season over an average player. Ask how many wins did the player ADD to the bottom line for his team? Yikes, if you applied that to the Cy Young or MVP, a bunch of existing names would come tumbling off and others would easily replace them. Neyer added that Hoyt Wilhelm in the 80's was the first reliever to get in the HOF, then Rollie Fingers, and if Gossage had quit sooner, he'd already be in.
