Mike Metheny, SFG Catcher
Coming up on The Show today: Giants' catcher Mike
Metheny, and former pitcher, John Wetteland. I'm now
ready to be very upset. We just heard Kevin Kennedy
casting slight aspersions on perceived Moneyball types,
and by extension stats types. But, don't be fooled. First,
reasons for young people separating from jobs often have
more to do with politics & how to deal with them than
anything else. Second, I've heard Kevin a lot, and he will
use and manipulate stats when it suits him. Which brings
us to the upcoming John Wetteland appearance. I've sent
email and other correspondence to Kevin about his past
statements regarding Wetteland and Mariano Rivera.
Wetteland deserves all the credit for being the closer of
the 1996 Yankees and winning the World Series for them
in that role. But, that was the only year in which Mariano
Rivera set up for Wetteland. Mariano's appearances in the
post season in 1995 came AFTER Wetteland, not as set
up. I'm preparing myself that Kennedy will try to minimize
Mariano as he usually does. First, in total saves, he won't
give the stat that includes regular AND post season--
post season is harder, Mariano has a lot of games there,
but pundits never mention that. There are several pundits
who are friends of another popular closer on the west coast,
who, I'm sure is a terrific person. Anyhow, I'll stop for now
and listen.
