Yankees no-hit by Marlins in Panama

"Well, that didn’t go according to plan. The Yankees just finished their first exhibition game in Panama. Not only did they lose 5-0, they were no-hit by a group of four different Marlins pitchers. Brett Gardner and Zelous Wheeler each drew a walk, and Dean Anna was hit by a pitch, but not a single Yankees batter recorded a hit on the night honoring closer Mariano Rivera. That’s just plain weird.

The Yankees experienced big leaguers who made the trip — Gardner, Derek Jeter, Carlos Beltran, Alfonso Soriano and Francisco Cervelli — combined to go 0-for-14 with six strikeouts. Each of those five had at one strikeout except Jeter, who had two. Adonis Garcia struck out to end the game.

Looking for a bright side? I suppose it was — appropriately enough — the pitching. Adam Warren allowed one run through 4.1 innings. He struck out six and walked none. Reliever Matt Daley, who’s making a case for roster consideration, went 1.2 hitless innings out of the bullpen. He stranded two inherited runners (Chase Whitley stranded one runner for Warren).

But, of course, the only thing that stands out from the box score is the 0 hits for the Yankees. Based on the tweets from my writer friends who were in attendance, it must have been quite an atmosphere, but ultimately a rather unexpected way to celebrate the career of Panama’s most-beloved Yankees icon." image ap, David Robertson caught Rivera's ceremonial first pitch.
