Pettitte, after a year away from the game, has agreed to a one-year, $2.5-million minor-league contract, the team announced Friday.
"It really started this winter and continued into the spring," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Friday....
Cashman said that Pettitte called him in December to talk about it. Cashman had an offer ready for Pettitte, but wanted to be sure Pettitte was ready to commit. At the time, Pettitte wasn't ready for that, Cashman said, adding that Pettitte wanted six weeks to work out and see if he could do it both physically and mentally. By then, Cashman had already signed Hiroki Kuroda and traded for Michael Pineda.
"I've been waking up every morning and going straight to training," Pettitte said Friday. He is not expected to be ready to start the season in the rotation." Pettitte throwing bp in Tampa, 2/29/12, photo Conrad Williams Jr., Newsday
