Garry D. Howard named Sporting News Editor in Chief
11/4, "Garry D. Howard, who has led the Journal Sentinel's sports department for 15 years, has been named editor in chief of the Sporting News in Charlotte, N.C.
- Howard, who will remain with the newspaper until late December, starts his new job early next year. He will oversee the extensive editorial operation of the Sporting News, including its daily online edition and its magazines.
"We thank him for his dedication, enthusiasm and passion for exceptional journalism," Martin Kaiser, editor of the Journal Sentinel, wrote in a letter to the staff Wednesday....
- Howard joined the Milwaukee Journal as executive sports editor in 1994. He became senior editor/sports of the Journal Sentinel in 1995 and assistant managing editor/sports in 2000. He finished a term as president of the Associated Press Sports Editors earlier this year.
Howard, a deputy sports editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer before joining the Journal, described the challenge of coordinating coverage of the Green Bay Packers' 1996 Super Bowl win and 1997 championship game appearance as the most exciting of his career."...
