"The math is simple: no bailout money, no Citi Field. Well, there still would be a field; it just would have to be called something else. The only people who would shed a tear over that are Citigroup executives.
You probably heard the calls for the new park to be named after
Jackie Robinson; that would have been an outstanding gesture by the Mets, to turn down the naming-rights cash and honor one of America's pioneers.
- Baseball is a business, though. And the Mets have every right to sell naming rights. If the economy hadn't crashed, those two congressmen from Ohio and Texas wouldn't know Citi Field from the City Light Diner on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.
But the economy did crash. And now
Citigroup is getting bailout money, wads and wads of it, "...
