Sammy Sosa welcomed to World Baseball Classic. Selling seats with beefy homerun hitters again?

Following an MLB.com 'Terms of Endearment' piece on the otherwise beefy and non-English speaking 'slugger' is this from World Baseball Dominican honcho via AP:
  • SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) -- "Sammy Sosa, who is fifth on baseball's career home run list, is welcome to represent the Dominican Republic in next year's World Baseball Classic, the team's general manager said Monday.

"Sammy has an open door to play in the Classic," Dominican general manager Stanley Javier told The Associated Press.

  • Last month, Sosa said he would like to play in the World Baseball Classic.

The 39-year-old outfielder did not play in the inaugural Classic in 2006, in which the Dominican Republic reached the semifinals.

In his big league career, Sosa has 609 homers and 1,667 RBIs from 1989-07 for the Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox and the Baltimore Orioles."

Wasn't the $20 million spent on the steroids investigation supposed to curtail Selig's reliance on beefy homerun hitters who had appeared before congress? (sm)
