Evidence: The NY Times discontinues the concept of "MURDER"

'Broncos Cornerback Dies in Shooting'

Was this just a misfire at a practice range? Their headline about last night's murder of Darrent Williams so far has some people thinking a hunting accident took place. NO MENTION OF THE WORD 'MURDER.' WHY? BECAUSE 'MURDER' SOUNDS WORSE THAN 'SHOOTING,' IT'S MUCH MORE SPECIFIC. IT'S A TERRIBLE, PREVENTABLE CRIME, BUT NOT ACCORDING TO THE NY TIMES. THEY DESPERATELY WANT TO SOFTEN CRIME. TO THEM, IT'S NOT THAT BAD TO BE MURDERED, SHOT, ROBBED, ETC. GOSH, I MUST NOT BE A NICE PERSON, BECAUSE I THINK THOSE THINGS ARE UNACCEPTABLE AND PREVENTABLE. Farther into the article, after a perfumed sappy opening, The Times continues:
  • "he was shot to death in downtown Denver when the limousine he was riding in was fired on from another vehicle, the police said. They declined to comment on whether any suspects were being questioned. Williams was 24. The shooting* occurred a few blocks from a nightclub where a group that included Williams had been in a dispute with another group..."
  • * "The shooting," you see? It's not cold blooded brutal murder, maybe it was a photography shoot or something. HE WHO CONTROLS THE LANGUAGE CONTROLS THE CULTURE. I guess you people like being controlled.
(Article referenced is from the NY Times (Sports section) by Judy Battista, 1/2/07) Addendum: A NY Daily News headline today about the murder of another athlete, a boxer from the Bronx, has the same idea: "
"BOXER MOWED DOWN BREAKING UP FIGHT"

Headline from the NY Daily News article 1/2/07.
