Mel Antonen, USA Today: No Lee Smith---too many of his saves were "easy"
On the subject of HOF voting, he'd vote in favor of Bruce
Sutter and Goose Gossage. On the issue of Lee Smith, Mel
says, "He played on some teams where the saves were
easier. Not on enough CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS. " He
says he's "AFRAID IT WOULD OPEN THE DOOR FOR
CLOSERS WHO DON'T DESERVE TO BE IN THE HOF."
"The stat "saves" is relatively new to baseball. People don't
quite know how to judge closers yet. We need time to
figure it out." Thanks, Mel. What you say is obvious &
true, but due to lack of objective reporting in the sports
media, it's often ignored.
